Chelsea squad analysis after another hefty spent summer

Blues were on a spending spree this summer aswell with 12 players signed. We are providing a position based squad analysis of Chelsea team.

The Blues have been spending big since Blue Co took over the club in 2022. They have signed over 40 players during this three years. Among which some are big enough to ask questions about the fairness in PSR accountings. Two players signed for more than €100 million. But do they have performed well enough? well enough to align with their spending spree. The answer will be a no. Zero top four appearences despite spending this big. Three managers came and went during this time. All Chelsea fans go with optimistic hopes as always towards a new season after another free spending transfer window. Let’s go through a position based analysis of the the current Chelsea squad post summer deadline day 2024.

ATTACK

On paper Chelsea have one of the strongest front lines in the Premier League right now. Just look the quality of their front line and just analyse the number of options Enzo maresca has at his disposal. In strike Nicolas Jackson despite an up and down first season is looking to improve his chances this season. Along with new signings Marc Guiu and Joao Felix signed from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively.

Since Maresca has been going with a 4-2-3-1 formation the three supporting attackers can be picked from multiple options he has. Cristopher Nkunku who is considered a new signing because of an injury hit first season limitted his playing time. PFA Young player of the year Cole Palmer who is expected to start most of the matches.

Along with Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk and new signings Jadon Sancho, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. He was one of the crucial players for Maresca during his last season at Leicester. Wow that is scary. But on paper. Maresca needs to find the best combinations among his options. The loss of experienced winger Raheem Sterling may affect the team at some point in the season. Cesar Casedei and Omari Kellyman are the other options avaliable. We have wait and see if missing out on Victor Osimhen will affect their top four ambitions.

MIDFIELD

According to the formation there are two holding midfielders and for that they have two of their most expensive players Enzo Fernandes and Moises Caicedo. Both are expected to be the first choice. We also expect Maresca to occassionally try out Enzo in the attcaking position which brings Romeo Lavia into the equation. Lavia spent most of his debut season on sidelines with injury but is now back. The slae of Conor Gallagher to Atletico has been one of the stories of the window. As Gallagher was the player with most minutes on the field for Chelsea in 2023-24 season. We have to see how Maresca and team is going to fill the void left by such a player.

DEFENSE

Chelse have an overflow of talents in the defensive department. Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill is expected to remain as the first choice central defensive duo as they had a strong start to the season. This is with Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile as secondary options. But recent performances of Badiashile and Disasi in the UECL match against Servette have sparked some criticism. New signing Tosin Adarabioyo will be another option for them at the centre of defense.

As fullbacks the manager has Euro cup winner Marc Cucurella in left back and he will certainly be the firts choice with new signing teenager Renato Veiga as another option. Chelsea fans expect Cucurella to put out the sparkling form he showed during the Euro 2024 campaign. Right full back is the only concern for Chelsea as captain Reece James who is espected to be the firts choice is out with injury and his deputy frenchman Malo Gusto suffered an ijury on Sunday against palace. The injury looks not good as per the sources.

GOALKEEPER

Spanish keeper Robert Sanchez will be the undisputed first choice with new signing Filip Jorgensen as the second choice. Jorgensen is one of the 12 signing they made during the window. He joined from spanish side Villarreal for €24.5 million. Marcus Bettinelli will serve as the third choice.

So that is a position based squad analysis of the Chelsea team for 2024-25 season.
