It was revealed at the start of the season, that Chelsea‘s star defender Wesley Fofana was almost ready to leave the club to join a French side. But newly appointed manager Enzo Maresca convinced him to stay at the club.
Fofana joined the Blues back in the summer of 2022. He completed a £70 million move from fellow Premier League side Leicester City. But due an ACL injury he missed the entire of last season. However, he has been the key defender for Chelsea so far this season, starting in almost every game in the league.
Several weeks ago, Fofana mentioned that he was really close to join his boyhood club Marseille. He even had talks with the club’s Sporting director. While speaking to Telefoot, Wesley Fofana said,
“I had a call that really touched me, and it would be a lie to say that I didn’t consider it. It was Medhi Benatia, sporting director of OM, and it touched me.”
But Maresca’s encouraging words made him stay at the club for now. Fofana mentioned that at the moment his sole focus is to win trophies with Chelsea. However, he never denied the possibility of joining the French side in future.
Wesley Fofana reacts on Manchester United move
Before the game against Manchester United last weekend, Wesley Fofana was involved in a stunning conversation with a supporter. While recording, a fan asked the French defender if he was coming to United.
After hearing that question , Fofana burst out of laugh and replied “Never” quite confidently. The fan further asked “Why not?” After that Fofana replied that question with a wag of his finger and smirk on his face. As the answer was quite simple that he would never betray his club to join a rival side.
Chelsea played United on Sunday after that, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Wesley Fofana did have a decent outing at the Old Trafford.
