Chelsea star midfielder didn’t like the way he left his former club

Chelsea star player Enzo Fernandez has recently revealed that, he regretted the way he left his former club in 2023. Enzo got popular across the footballing world after his breakout season with Argentine side River Plate in 2021. Seeing his potential Portuguese giants SL Benfica signed Enzo back in 2022, for a fee of £10 million.

It took Enzo such a little time to adapt with European football. As the 23-year-old had already become an important part of Benfica within 6 months. Enzo had already featured in 26 games across all competitions before the 2022 World Cup break. In that period, he scored 3 goals and registered 5 assists for the Eagles.

With his wonderful club performances, Enzo got a call-up from Argentina to feature the side in the World Cup’s. And it was a life changing event for the young midfielder. Enzo had a big role to play at the midfield, as he replaced injured Giovani Lo Celso going into the tournament. Fans were eager to watch Enzo but also were nervous as he didn’t have much international football experience back then.

But Enzo played beyond the expectations and was one of the best players in the whole tournament. He played in all the 7 matches including the finals scoring a goal and providing an assist. For his performances Enzo was even named as the Young Player of the tournament at the 2022 World Cup.

Record breaking transfer of Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea

After that tournament, Premier League side Chelsea didn’t take time to bid an offer for Enzo Fernandez to the Eagles. He joined the English giants during the winter transfer window in 2023 setting new records. The 23-year-old moved from Portugal to England for £106.8 million- a record transfer fee in the history of British football.

Since joining the Blues, he has been one of the key players for them. Under previous Chelsea manager Pochettino, Enzo played more as an attacking midfielder. But change of management has also changed Enzo’s position in the pitch. As under new manager Maresca, he is playing as a box-to-box midfielder. Enzo has partnered up with Moises Caicedo, who broke his record-breaking fee last season (£115 million) in a double pivot role.

However, after playing 70 games with the Blues in almost 2 years, Enzo still has love for his previous club. As he has recently claimed a emotional statement last week.

Enzo apologizes to Benfica fans

Enzo Fernandez himself mentioned that he didn’t like the way he left Benfica last year. As the 23-year-old believed, everything happened too quick. In a conference with the Express, Enzo said,

“Let me say hello the Benfica fans, who always send messages and remember me. Obviously, I didn’t like the way I left the club, but I am very grateful to the club and everyone for all the support they give me.”

He didn’t give too many details about what he tried to say exactly. But it is sure that he truly regretted the way he left. After the World Cup, he was celebrating with his teammates at the capital city Buenos Aires. And he didn’t get enough time to say goodbye to his fans due to that. As he arrived at West London in the early February, one month after his triumph at Qatar.

Though it ended too early for both the parties, as Enzo only stayed at Benfica for just 6 months, but the ace midfielder will not hesitate to play again for them. Portuguese league is a very competitive league and currently ranked as the 6th toughest across the globe. So, a return to Benfica will of Enzo Fernandez will be cherished by the fans.
