Chelsea star Mykhailo Mudryk quieting the naysayers with a winner for Ukraine

Mykhailo Mudryk with a brilliant performance for Ukraine in a crucial match after being branded overrated since signing for Chelsea.

The Ukrainian star showed glimpses of his talent, Saturday night for his national team. Mudryk went on to score the only goal of the match to hand the victory for Ukraine against Georgia. He has been branded as ‘overrated’ as failed to live up the billing at Chelsea. Progressing through his second full season at the club the winger is yet to settle well in west London. With the whole host of attackers in the squad Mudryk hardly starts for the team. Currently a rotational player often comes on as substitutes during Premier League matches.

MYKHAILO MUDRYK FOR UKRAINE

Mudryk has always been a bright spark for the Ukraine national football team since he broke through the youth levels. He has always shown that potential when he puts the yellow of Ukraine on. Yet again he has stood out for Ukraine in a crucial Nations League match. The Eastern European country had the worst starts to a Nations League campaign after losing both of their opening matches. Along with the memories of a highly disappointing Euro 2024 campaign it was burdening upon Ukraine to get back to winning ways. Having lost the first two matches to Albania and Czechia for 2-1 and 3-2 respectively it was upon Mudryk and company to pick up their first points of the campaign.

Due to the ongoing Russian-Ukraine war the Blue and Yellow had to play their home match at Stadion Poznan in Poland. Anyway, the match began with a slight hiccup as the floodlights behind one of the goal posts malfunctioned. That small halt in the match didn’t wear Ukrainians down as Mudryk went on to score at the 35-minute mark. The Chelsea winger picked the ball up from deep then went on to beat three defenders with his mazy dribbling and pace before unleashing a low shot from 20 yards out. A brilliant solo goal from Ukraine’s talisman and this shows how dangerous he is at his best. However, Chelsea fans are yet to see the best of Mykhailo Mudryk. The Ukraine number 7 was rated with 8.3 by sofascore.com for his performance against Georgia on Saturday.

TRANSFER TALKS

It was reported last month that Chelsea are considering disposing Mudryk for good as he is unsettled at the club. The Ukrainian arrived at Stamford Bridge in January 2023 for €88 m and signed a 8.5-year contract with the club. Even though the start was pretty good the winger is yet to show his worth. The pressure of the price tag and the changing managerial conditions might be the reasons for his poor form. Anyway, from history it is evident that Chelsea is not a place where time is not a luxury for even the best players and managers. The Blues have followed that sort of an attitude since Roman Abramovic took over the club in 2003. The owners changed later in 2022, but the attitude has remained the same. It is evident in the dismissal of Mauricio Pochettino at the end of the previous season.

So yes, Mykhailo Mudryk might have at least two whole months and the rest of October to buy some confidence from the manager. If he fails to rise up to the billing, it will not be a surprise if the winger is sold. With a huge number of attacking options at his disposal, losing Mudryk would not be a huge problem for Enzo Maresca.

WHAT NEXT FOR MYKHAILO MUDRYK AND CHELSEA?

Chelsea are set to face league leaders Liverpool at Anfield on their return to league action. The Blues will be determined to continue their recent run of good form. It was a comparatively better international break for Mudryk after Ukraine picked up 4 points out of 6. The goal might have induced some confidence into the winger. However, it is almost certain that he would start the match against Liverpool from the bench. It would be an interesting couple of months for Chelsea and Mudryk. And for fans they would want to see the Mudryk that they saw Saturday night. The talent that made Chelsea and Arsenal enter a bidding war for his signature.
