Andrey Santos, who is on loan to French side RC Strasbourg is already marking up his name in the world football. The Blues loaned him out mid-season in February 2024 until the end of the season. It looked like Santos would rejoin the Blues camp this summer but at the end the loan got extended for one more season.
It was a great decision for both the clubs and players prospective. Chelsea already have around 30 players in their first team squad-list. The Blues already have the likes of Enzo, Caicedo, Palmer, Lavia in their midfield. So, if Santos would have joined the Blues camp this summer, he wouldn’t have got enough game time to improve his play. Strasbourg will also be very happy to keep Santos after his performance for them last season.
Santos named Ligue 1 Young Player Of The Month award
The 20 year old Brazilian has been named as the Young Player Of The Month for August. Santos has scored in both of the games he has played in August. He scored the opening goal in a 3-1 victory over Stade Rennais. It took him just 23 minutes to break the deadlock.
Santos also gave Strasbourg a lead against Olympique Lyonnais for the second time in the match, a week later on 31st August. He scored from an open header in the 48th minute. However, it was not enough for the visitors as they let the the 3-1 lead slip away and ended up losing by 4-3.
Lyon is a title contender in the French league, so they are obviously a stronger side than Strasbourg. But there will be plenty of positives for the Le Recing’s including the performance of Santos. He will be one of the pilers behind Strasbourg’s campaign this season.
Though Santos’s performance hasn’t gone in vain as he was awarded the Young POTM award and his name was also listed in the Ligue 1 Team of Week for matchday 3. He has played every minutes since returning to the side. Santos was also in the playing Xi for the match against Angers last weekend which ended up in a 1-1 draw. In that match his future teammate Djorde Petrovic on loan from Chelsea also featured as a debutant for the La Recing’s.
Journey of the Brazilian so far
Chelsea would be monitoring the Brazilian very keenly. The 20 year old primarily operates as a box-to-box midfielder. Along with the defensive instincts he is also an attacking threat in the opposition box. As per the information of Chelsea FC, he progressed through the ranks of Vasco da Gama his boyhood club. Santos was a key player behind their promotion to Brasileiro Seria A 2022. In that period he played 33 games where he managed to bag 8 goals.
As a result his name got famous across the footballing world. In January 2023, Santos completed his permanent transfer to Chelsea in a deal worth £13m from the Brazilian top flight at the age of 18. He returned to Vasco da Gama again on loan until the end of June. He returned to London before the start of last season. Despite a good impression at the pre-season under former manager Mauricio Pochettino he was initially sent on loan again to Premier League side Nottingham Forest.
He was recalled during the winter transfer window in January and was sent on loan to sister club Strasbourg. Though he had a slow start for the season, Santos managed to find his form eventually.
If Santos can keep up with his performance and expectations, he could be set for a great future at Chelsea. The Blues have already signed his fellow young countryman Estevao Willian this season, who will be joining them in the summer of 2025. The club rates these young Brazilian talents very highly and thinks they would be a great future asset for the club in near future.
