The Blues are interested to sign defenders next year. As of now, they have perfect opportunity to repeat the Thiago Silva deal. It is because Chelsea are now believed to have lead to sign Jonathan Tah.
Jonathan Tah is playing his 10th season with Bayer Leverkusen. Over the time he has been very important for the club. He has played 370 matches for Leverkusen. Along with quality defending, he has also provided the club with 15 goals and 10 assists.
Last season, Tah helped Leverkusen to win their first ever Bundesliga title. He enjoyed the best goal scoring season of his career with 6 goals in 48 matches. This season the German international has played 16 games and has started in all of them.
The defender’s contract will expire at the end of this season. He will leave a huge void and Leverkusen are aware of that. But at the moment, the German champions are finding it hard to convince Tah to stay.
Tah is happy with Leverkusen and has not made his final decision. But, offers from top clubs may tempt him to move away from Germany. He will be open to hold talks with foreign clubs in January.
At the moment, many of the top clubs clubs from Spain and England are keen to sign the defender. What makes him top target is the fact that he is still only 28 years old and can be signed for free.
Is Jonathan Tah headed to Chelsea?
As per CaughtOffside, the Blues are planning to make early efforts to sign Tah. Earlier, it was revealed by Fabrizio Romano that the Blues will be very active in the centre back market.
Chelsea can repeat the Thiago Silva move if they are able to sign Jonathan Tah. Silva joined the Blues in 2020 at the age of 35 and then guided the club to Champions League triumph. The Brazilian too joined Chelsea on a free transfer.
Tah is still very young when compared with Thiago Silva. Hence, the Blues may trust the German more as he still has a lot to offer at the highest level. Tah can inject much needed experience in the Chelsea squad.
But, it will not be easy for Chelsea due to the heavy competition. At the moment, Manchester United are said to be their top competition in pursuit of Tah. Red Devils want to replace Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof who are nearing the end of their United career.
