Bashir Humphreys has completed a loan move to Championship side Burnley from Chelsea with a buy option valid for next season.
The 21 year old joins Burnley on season long loan deal with a buy option valid at 15 million pounds including add ons. Humphreys made only two senior appearances for the Chelsea senior team before shipping him off to Lancashire. The Englishman normally plays as a Centre back and will be great addition to promotion contenders Burnley. Burnley have announced the move through their social media handle on Wednesday.
HUMPHREYS TIME AT CHELSEA
Bashir Humphreys joined Chelsea youth academy in 2017 from Reading. He quickly progressed through the youth ranks signing his professional contract with the club in 2021. The defender has been capped three times for the England U21 team. He was a regular for Chelsea youth teams making his debut with the u18s in the FA Youth Cup. Humphreys was also named captain of the u18s for the 2020-21 season. The Englishman suffering an injury set back at the beginning of the following season but finished season strongly.
His brilliant display with the youth teams earned him a chance to train with the senior team. Humphreys made his senior debut in the FA Cup against Manchester City in January of 2023. For the rest of the season he joined German second division side SC Paderbourne where he gained more experience. This followed with a season long loan to Swansea City in the Championship where he got regular minutes and even scored a winner against Norwich. His time at Chelsea is over with all the different defensive options the club has with them and Burnley are likely to trigger the clause at the end of the season.
CHELSEA TRANSFER BUSINESS
Chelsea have been so busy in the transfer market with all the incomings and outgoings. Humphreys will be the 16th outgoing player for Chelsea in this very summer transfer window. There are a lot of incomings for Chelsea too.
Everyone will be wondering how Chelsea are being able to make signings season after season. BBC Sport reporter Nizaar Kinsella was able to explain this. According to him, Chelsea have sold a lot of young talents to fund their latest exploits in the transfer market. Chelsea sold 85 million pounds worth of talents. This was even before the sale of Conor Gallagher was made. So it’s even more now. Chelsea sold Mason Mount to United for 55 million pounds last season. This season Lewis Hall to Newcastle United, Omari Hutchinson to Ipswich and Connor Gallagher the latest to Atletico Madrid. The list goes on and on.
Now, According to reliable source of Fabrizio Romano, Bashir Humphrey’s deal to Burnley will yield them 12 million pounds in fixed fee with 2.7 million pounds in add ons. For player who made only two senior appearances for the club this fee is more than enough.
SALE OF HOME GROWN PLAYERS
Considering the talent in Humphreys, Chelsea are losing a really good player. But this is not the first home grown talent they are letting go. Mason Mount was one of the stars in their recent Champions League winning season and they have let him go. Lewis Hall to Newcastle United, Omari Hutchinson, Callum Hudson Odoi, Connor Gallagher this list also goes long and long.
The fact is that they have made profits from these sales. But these players were born and bread within the Chelsea DNA. Who really want to play for the badge to play for the Blues. Especially the cases of Gallagher and Mason Mount who were born as Chelsea fans and made their dream come true by playing for Chelsea. So letting such talents go and signing talents for big money and big salary with little enthusiasm for the club has made some fans question themselves.
