Chelsea’s Cole Palmer has started this season on a high note. Similar to his first season at the Blues camp last year. The team has also adapted very well under the new manager Enzo Maresca. After a disappointing start to the season against Man City, the Blues have came back well. They are unbeaten in the league since then with 3 wins & a draw, standing at the 5th position in the table.
Chelsea were lucky that Palmer’s fitness issues wasn’t a big concern and he is all fit to compete. However, to manage the workload on Palmer, the Englishman is left out of the Conference League squad-list. Palmer has already bagged 2 goals and 4 assists in 5 appearances so far in the Premier League .
The Englishman was dazzling as ever in the London derby, as he scored to help the team win over a 3-0 margin against West Ham. But there have been some significant changes in Palmer’s game since the Italian manager joined the Cobham camp.
Playing in a central role
Palmer who was seen playing in the right wing last season, has adapted more of a central role under Maresca this season. He is playing as a Central attacking midfielder, so that he can have more time on the ball.
Palmer is dropping deeper in his own territory to collect the ball from the double pivot midfielders behind him. In this way he can dictate the game with his individual brilliance. We have seen the importance of De Bruyne and Odegard for their respective teams in a similar style of position. ‘
Palmer has succeeded to adapt his new role as he has created the most opportunities from the midfield in the Premier League so far. His partnership with the Blues striker Nicolas Jackson has built up very well, as through their link-up play the Blues have scored the most goals so far.
Palmer and Jackson synergy
The most positive sign for the Blues so far this season, would be the redemption of Jackson. The 23-year-old Senegalese international didn’t have a great time last season. Despite having 19 goal contributions in 35 league appearances, he was getting criticized due to his poor finishing.
However, Jackson have turned the table upside down as he have already scored 4 goals and provided 2 assists in 5 matches so far in the new season. His link-up play with Palmer have been on a top level. Jackson has been making a lot of in behind runs for the through balls provided by Palmer. Moreover, both of the goals scored by Palmer was assisted by Jackson. We will love to watch more of this kind of play from this duo.
How good is the Chelsea squad?
Cole Palmer was not only the best Chelsea player but also one of the best players in the world last season. So, it is safe to say that Palmer is the most important player for the Blues right now. But, no club can win trophies depending on a single individual.
Chelsea have a world class squad filled with match winners. But things didn’t work out well last season for them. Injury problems, lack of synergy and other issues affected the results at the end of the season. But that doesn’t hold down such wonderful players like the ones Chelsea have in their squad.
Maresca has already started to show results with the team. He knows the quality the players have. The Italian has used the so called ‘flop’ players like Sancho, Nkunku, Jackson very well so far. He gives enough minutes to all the star-packed players of the Blues squad. Maresca have also showed full support to the out of form Mudryk since his arrival. It will be a great watch to see this squad grow along with the Italian manager.
