Cole Palmer had a world class 2023-24 season with Chelsea. The Englishman joined the Blues camp on the deadline day, from Manchester City for a fee of £42.5m, last summer. To everyone’s surprise the 22-year-old winger was not only the best player for Chelsea, but he was also one of the best player’s in the world last season. As he had 42 goal contributions (27 goals, 15 assists) in 48 matches. Out of which 22 goals came in the Premier League.
However, the Englishman has discussed about his favorite goal for the Blues in the Premier League’s YouTube channel. For Palmer his best goal came against the Red Devils in the form of a stoppage time winner.
Palmer’s phenomenal hat-trick against United
United faced Chelsea last time in the Premier League away from home on 5th April. A sensational display from Palmer helped the Blues get all the three points. The game started with an early lead for the home team. As Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher scored at the 4th minute. Chelsea double their lead through a penalty in the 19th minute, which was struck by ‘Cold’ Palmer himself.
However, the Red Devils didn’t took much time to lock-in. A goal from Alejandro Garnacho in the 34th minute broke the deadlock for United. And to everyone’s surprise captain Bruno Fernandes scored the equalizer few minutes later. The score was 2-2 at the end of the first half. United’s star boy Garnacho scored again in the 67th minute to complete the dream comeback. They thought they had done their job, but Palmer had other plans. In the 10th minute of added time at the second half Palmer scored from the spot-kick to equalize.
Everyone thought the match was done at the moment, but another opportunity came quickly and Palmer took full advantage of it to score his ‘favorite’ goal. The Englishman received the ball from a corner kick and had all the time to carry the ball near the edge of the box. He struck a hard and low shot through the flock of Red shirts and it went in. But, even Palmer was confused by the tactics of Erik Ten Hag’s United, when he scored that goal.
United tactics stunned the Chelsea winger
While speaking to Premier League show Uncut, Palmer claimed this was favorite goal. However, he was very surprised about the way United played at that moment. When he received the ball, he just couldn’t believe how much time and space he had. “When I got the ball, I took a touch and then I took another one and I thought where is everyone?”, Palmer said.
“Then there was just loads of players there so I thought ‘if I shoot on target, hard, I’ve got a chance’. When I got it, they were all pointing saying ‘mark him’, and none of them came out.”
After seeing all the space he was allowed to have in the last seconds he was thinking, ‘what?’ It was indeed very coward play from Erik Ten Hag’s team. No one went near to Palmer to block the angle he had created. After scoring the 3rd goal they thought they have won it and were just passing around the ball, instead of marking and pressing the opponent players.
But he was very happy to score that goal. Palmer has scored better and tougher goals than that. But the situation and the opponent makes it more special. Palmer was so surprised at the end of the match that he didn’t even know what to do.Palmer stated at the end that it was all ’emotion’, they were losing till the 96th minute but everything changed within a matter of time.
