Cole Palmer is the main man at Chelsea right now. He became the most valuable Chelsea player last season when he joined from Man City and it is still the same this season. But this all could have not happened as Palmer reveals a shocking story about his move from Premier League champions.
Cole Palmer came up through the Man City academy but was not getting enough chances to play for the senior team. He was sitting on the bench and hence City were open to let him go. Last year, Chelsea signed Palmer on the deadline day for £42.5 million.
The move was then followed by Cole Palmer masterclass. It turned out to be breakout season for Palmer who scored 25 goals and picked 15 assists in 45 games for Chelsea. He was then called up to represent England at Euros where he proved himself too.
Palmer has once again started this season on a high note. He has scored 7 goals and picked 5 assists in just 11 Premier League games. City might regret the decision of selling him due to his current form. But, Chelsea could have missed the opportunity to sign him as the player revealed that he was not ready for the move.
Cole Palmer was not ready to join Chelsea
Palmer spoke about his move recently in the interview with GQ Magzine. He said that he was not ready to move away from City but was persuaded. This could have been a huge miss for Chelsea and in contrast a huge gain for City.
“I wasn’t even gonna go (to) Chelsea, I got persuaded. I remember training on a wednesday at City in the afternoon, and the news was ‘they are trying to agree a fee’. Every time the ball went out I’d ask the kit man or the doctor if they’ve agreed the fee yet” – Cole Palmer about his move away from City.
The story could have been fully different if the fee was not agreed on that day. Chelsea could have missed the difference maker and could have been a worse position.
On the other hand, City could have secured their future with Palmer still in their camp. But he could have not been this good if he was not getting regular game time. Palmer would have not been able to paly regularly despite his quality at City.
Chelsea fans are very happy that Palmer is their player now. They will hope that the 22 year old stays with them for a long time. Currently, Palmer has a contract with Chelsea running until 2033. He will now focus on breaking his own record of 33 G/A in Premier League last season.
