The rise of Cole Palmer as a Chelsea player has been one of the best things that had happened in the world football in the past few years. The 22-year-old winger joined Chelsea from Man City last season for a fee of £40m. Palmer was considered as a great talent at City under Pep. But he wanted to play more minutes, so he decided to leave the Etihad.
But no one thought that the 40 million pounds man will have 40 and more goal contributions in his first ever full-time season with Chelsea. Despite of having a lot of potential, it is still not normal for a 22-year-old lad to have that much contribution for their side.
Palmer even outscored the one and only Erling Haaland on having the most PL goal contributions since the start of the last season (43). And these stats are increasing rapidly as the Englishman isn’t just done yet.
The Englishman continues to rule the world
After winning the PFA Young Player of the Year Award, Palmer has continued where he left last season. Despite of changing his style of play under new manager Enzo Maresca. This season Palmer is playing as an attacking mid instead of his preferred right side. But Palmer’s brilliance has adapted the role so well that he has already scored 6 goals and provided 5 assists in 7 games in the league. Recently he made a new record while playing against Brighton.
In Chelsea’s 4-2 win against Brighton couple of week ago, Cole Palmer became the only Premier League player to score 4 goals before the end of the first half. His 21st, 28th, 31st, and 41st minute goals destroyed the Seagulls. He also became the second Blues player ever after Frank Lampard to score 4 goals in two different occasions. Palmer previously achieved the 4 goal feat last season against Everton.
Palmer’s brilliance in the pitch has also seen in international football. Though he wasn’t a regular starter for the Three Lions under manager Gareth Southgate in the recent EURO competitions. But he played an important role coming of the bench in the knockout rounds. Palmer scored an important first penalty in the shootout against Switzerland in the Quarter finals. And also he was the man who assisted the winning goal of Ollie Watkins against Netherlands in the semi-finals.
Not only that, Palmer even scored a belter of an equalizer against Spain in the finals of the Euro. But England still fell short as the Spaniards scored a late winner by a great header from Mikel Merino. However, Palmer’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed at all.
Cole Palmer wins the England POTY award
Cole Palmer has recently been named England’s Men’s Player of the Year. His fellow English peers voted for him as the best player of 2024. Palmer received the award during the international break last week, when he joined the Three Lions camp. This is a great feat for such a young player as he had beat superstars like Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane to achieve that.
According to the reports of Ben Jacobs (journalist), this is the first time since 2010 that a Chelsea player has been named as the best English player of the year. Only Ashley Cole has received this feat as a Blues player in the past two decades.
England interim manager Lee Carsley have congratulated the 22-year-old and stated that he is a big fan of Cole Palmer. This kind of words by managers and support from teammates would definitely help Palmer to grow in a one of the greats of the game for sure. We will be hoping to see more of ‘Cold’ Palmer magic as the season continues.
