Cole Palmer wins England Men’s Player of The Year award

Cole Palmer is on a run of a lifetime. Ever since his move away from Manchester City to Chelsea materialized, he has been on a tear. The 22-year-old has been scoring goals and smashing records for fun. The Chelsea star has started this season strongly as well. He leads the league in goal contributions with six goals and five assists after seven games. His rise as a talent since last year has taken the league by storm. Seven games into the season we have people discussing if he is the best player in the prem right now. Starting the season strongly has translated into Chelsea being placed fourth on the league table, higher than anyone would’ve expected. The Blues will face Liverpool, Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Arsenal in the next four league fixtures.

Let’s talk about what led to Cole Palmer’s award and what fans have to say.

Cole Palmer at Chelsea

Enzo Maresca has some great ideas as a football coach but even he would’ve learned by now that the best strategy at Chelsea is called ‘just give it to Palmer’. After trying to tweak his role in the beginning, Maresca has played Palmer as the ten in every game after the one against Man City. The youngster has picked up from where he left off. This season also he is Chelsea’s best player and his value in this team is reflected when you realize that he has been involved in eleven of the sixteen goals scored by the team. To understand how goof he is, look at his stats since moving to Stamford Bridge. The ex-Manchester City man has fifty-one goal contributions in fifty-four matches. These are not normal numbers, these are Haaland-type stats.

The two of them are very different players but we need to take into account the team that they both have played for. Cole Palmer has played for a very mediocre Chelsea side where it was he who was carrying the team. Whereas in Erling Haaland’s case, he was playing for the best team in the world along with the best manager in the world. The two can’t be compared but the fact that Palmer’s stats are comparable to Haaland’s is a testament to how amazing he has been.

Fans react to Palmer winning

England players chose Cole Palmer as their 2024 Men’s Player of the Year. Bukayo Saka finished third in the voting after winning the award two years in a row. Jude Bellingham impressed with a stellar debut season at Real Madrid, earning him second place. I believe that it could have been either one of them, both of them were sensational for their teams since the day they put on the team’s jerseys. Both carried their teams for long stretches in the season at a very young age and scored or assisted many late goals to win or draw matches.

Fans have expressed mixed opinions about Cole Palmer winning, some believe that Jude had an unbelievable season and should’ve won. Palmer and Bellingham were brilliant but the reason why I believe that Palmer’s performances were more impressive is because he was doing it for Chelsea, while Jude was doing it for a team full of stars. People expected Jude Bellingham to excel, and he did. But Palmer has exceeded expectations and developed faster than predicted. Palmer was also a highly-rated youngster, but nobody would’ve expected him to be this good, this quick. Jude was far more important in the national team. He was their best player.

Fans blasted the manager for benching Palmer, but whenever Palmer took the pitch, he delivered exceptional performances. He scored the equalizer in the finals, and even though England went on to lose, Palmer scored when it mattered. Twenty-two goals and eleven assists in the Premier League last year combined with his goal in the Euros final meant that he was voted the England Men’s Player of The Year for 2024, becoming the first Chelsea player to win the honor since Ashley Cole won it in 2010.
