Edinson Cavani was handed a 3-match ban along with a £100,000 fine for a tweet that was considered racial by the FA. He has also been ordered to undergo an education programme.
This incident had occurred after his heroic performance against Southampton that helped Manchester United grab a late winner. He was gaining a lot of praise on social media. However, one such response he made to a close friend of his, resulted in the action taken by the FA. He had mentioned negrito, which is the Spanish translation of a little black man.
CONMEBOL UNHAPPY WITH FA’S DECISION ON CAVANI:
Cavani was unaware of the gravity, a word like that had in England. As soon as he had put up that tweet, he was warned by the club after which he took it down. He later apologized for what he wrote and accepted the punishment as he did not want to fight against a respectable cause.
But the Uruguayan Players’ Association were fuming from the decision taken by the FA. They termed this act as “a true discriminatory act” and “against Uruguayan culture“ as they notified the FA to overturn their decision.
The governing body of football in South America published a statement on Tuesday saying;
“CONMEBOL expresses its solidarity with the player Edinson Cavani, sanctioned by the Football Association of England.
The disciplinary measure for the outstanding player from the Uruguayan team clearly does not consider the cultural characteristics and the use of certain terms in everyday speech in Uruguay.
The judgment of these types of statements, within the framework of a process that can lead to penalties for the athlete and that affect his reputation and good name, must always be carried out taking into account the context in which they were made and, above all, cultural peculiarities of each player and each country.
CONMEBOL condemns and will always condemn with the greatest energy any racist or discriminatory manifestation. But the specific case for which Cavani was sanctioned does not constitute one of them.”– South American Football Association on FA’ decision on banning Cavani
MANCHESTER UNITED SURVIVING WITHOUT CAVANI:
Cavani was an outstanding impact on the team. Despite being 33-years-old, his performance was never astray. His performance has been crucial for the team to come back from tough situations. He scored a beautiful opener against Everton in the EFL Cup Quarter-final and also scored a decisive brace against Southampton. He has scored 4 goals so far.
The former PSG player has already served 1 of his 3-match ban and will be further missing the remaining 2 matches this week. The next match that he will be missing is the crucial Semi-final tie against Manchester City on Wednesday.
Manchester United are on a great run this season. They are on level points with Liverpool in the Premier League with a game in hand. United will be desperate to have him back to provide the team with clutch goals.
