The transfer window is in the last month and every club is eager to make the required decision for their club. One club that has been active in this transfer window also are Chelsea. They have signed some few players and are also looking to let go of some players. One player that can parts ways with Chelsea is Connor Gallagher.
Gallagher’s future at the club has always been a topic of discussion, and now there finally seems to be a conclusion of this chapter. Gallagher entered his last year of the contract with the club. Their have been conversation between the player and the club regarding the extension but no agreement was made between the parties. Gallagher wanted to opt for a longer duration of contract but Chelsea were only offering 2 years of contract with a possible year extension.
Now with the new manager in place, the dynamics have shifted. New manager Enzo Maresca has reportedly informed Gallagher that he would only be a squad player for him and would not get a crucial role under his managerial reign.
Atletico have finally convinced Connor Gallagher
With the failed contract extension talks and the manager’s view regarding the player, the best idea for everyone seems to be just to part ways. To utilise this situation, Atletico Madrid saw this as an opportunity and have reportedly signed the player on a £34million deal.
However, signing the Englishman was not so easy for Diego Simeone’s team. They had to convince Connor Gallagher to leave his boyhood club but Sky sports reported that Gallagher has finally agreed for this transfer.
Other teams were also interested to secure Gallagher and Tottenham Hotspur also made a pursuit for him. Furthermore, Aston Villa offered a higher fees than Atletico Madrid but Gallagher rejected the bid in hope of continue playing for Chelsea.
Now that the contract extension deals comes to an end with no positives for anyone, Gallagher seems to saying goodbye to his boyhood club. Gallagher joined the Chelsea academy in 2008 and after 216 years of service, he will be leaving the club.
Time at Chelsea
Throughout this tenure, Gallagher spent most of his time on loan to clubs, including Crystal Palace where he had delivered one of his best performances. For Chelsea, he is leaving with 10 goals and 10 assists to his name in 95 matches. Furthermore, he only won the 2018-19 Europa league with the team but did not get a single minute in that tournament.
Now with Gallagher set to leave, there remains a void in the squad. Chelsea have two routes that they can go for. They have currently 4 backup midfielder options that they can try out instead of Connor Gallagher. The second option then can go for is to sign another midfielder and add him to the already big enough squad of theirs.
They already have a 38-men squad and with the reports coming out, they may add another player to this set of players. With Connor Gallagher leaving, Chelsea are now eyeing Celtic’s Matt O’Riley. Chelsea have considered the Danish player as the ideal replacement for Connor Gallagher. Atletico were also linked with the player but now their signing of Gallagher, Chelsea have an easy way to sign O’Riley.
Chelsea’s problematic approach
Chelsea have already signed two midfielders in this transfer window. They signed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester city and Renato Veiga from FC Basel. It will be interesting to see if Chelsea trust their current players or bring another one in their squad.
The current approach of Chelsea of signing multiple players in every transfer window and not trusting the players in hand is not working for them. For a football team to work efficiently, the players and the manager needs time. A system needs time to be implemented. However, in Chelsea’s case, the factor of giving time does not exist.
They will enter this season with a new manager and also new bunch of players. No Chelsea fans has any idea of what to expect from the team. The only thing every Blue wants is to give time and let the team attain that stability. Adding just a bunch of players in the squad will never be the solution. As the saying goes, too many cooks spoils the broth, this seems to be the case for the Chelsea team currently.
