It is the season of international tournaments in the footballing world. In the EUROs we have our finalist ready as Spain reached the final beating France thanks to a wonderful performance from the young FC Barcelona player Lamine Yamal. On the other hand, England reached the final by delivering their best performance against Netherlands in the semifinals. Ollie Watkins scored the winner in the 90th minute to make it 2-1 and taking England to back-to-back EUROs final.
In the COPA America, we also have our finalist ready. In the first semifinal, Argentina comfortably defeated Canada with a 2-0 scoreline and qualified for the finals. The interesting match was the 2nd semifinal between Uruguay and Colombia. Colombia defeated the Uruguay team by 1-0 and qualified for the finals. However, the attention was taken by what happened after the final whistle.
Uruguay vs Colombia: Darwin Nunez acted impulsively?
Chaos broke down after Colombia defeated Uruguay and the fans of the team went wild in the stands. Darwin Nunez was seen carrying players to the stands after the finals whistle. In the video it was visible that the Liverpool striker climbed the stand and went to punch the fan, but the police held him back. However, when the police force controlled him, Nunez received a punch on his face.
There are constant footage showing on the social media platform showcasing how Nunez got involved in the fight. There was surely criticism but knowing the real reason why Nunez and the players got involved, there have been a sense of respect for them.
The players got involved in the fight to save their family members. The players’ families were sitting near the Colombian fans only. Furthermore, those fans were making too much of a chaos and created a hostile environment that was not safe for anyone. Reportedly, they were a bunch of fanbase who had consumed an unsafe amount of liquor, and it was dangerous to be around them.
Seeing that the chaos was breaking out, Nunez jumped in without thinking of any consequences, just to save his family. After sometime, Nunez was spotted on the pitch too, with his family and consoling his child. His Liverpool teammate Luis Diaz also came to show his support for the player and Luis Suarez was also there.
Official comments on the situation
The Uruguayan football president Ignacio Alonso has shared his views on this matter. ” Our players acted in a very natural and in a humanly instinctive way. They wanted to save their children, their families, their siblings. It was a very natural reaction given the situation at that time.”
Furthermore, the Uruguayan defender Jose Maria Gimenez also shared his views on this situation. “The whole situation was a disaster. There were no police or any security to manage the situation. We had to jump in and intervene to save our families. This also happened because some fans had too many extra drinks. The Colombian fans created a havoc where our family was sitting.”
Darwin Nunez has still not made a single comment on the entire incident. Furthermore, CONMEBOL, which is the South America’s governing body, will conduct a proper review of the situation before the final of the COPA America.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup concerns
We just have to wait for an official from the officials regarding the actions taken on Darwin Nunez. However, no football fans thinks that any action should be taken because what Nunez did was to save his family. Rather than punishing the player, enquiry shoould be done regarding the Host of the tournament.
Concerns are now raising about the quality of the overall event in America. The next FIFA world cup 2026 is supposed to take place in the USA only. Given the lack of security, the pitch quality and small size with a lack of technology raises some doubt about their caliber of hosting the world cup. The US football federation need to analyze their mistake and short comings and make sure that they get it all sort out before the 2026 world cup.
