David Raya joined Arsenal permanently this summer. He recently opened up about what that move meant for him. The Spaniard also revealed about Mikel Arteta’s influence on the deal.
Raya joined Arsenal last year on loan which came as a surprise for Gooners. It was because Aaron Ramsdale was already present at the club. The Englishman was doing great so the move for Raya did not make sense at first.
Later, Raya got the chance to prove himself and he grabbed it with both hands. He quickly showed everyone why Arteta made a move for him. The Spaniard was quickly able to replace Ramsdale from the starting lineup.
Raya helped Gunners to finish on the second place in Premier League last season. They lost the league title by only 2 points. Arsenal then made a decision to hand Raya a permanent contract this year.
Gunner paid €31.9 million to Brentford and made Raya their permanent keeper. This then forced Aaron Ramsdale out of the club as he was not ready to sit on bench the entire season.
David Raya opens up about what the Arsenal move meant to him
David Raya recently spoke about what it meant to him when Gunners came knocking on his door. He also gave credits to the plans of Mikel Arteta which played a huge role in getting the deal done.
“All the effort and work has been worth it. Every child dreams of playing for a team as big as Arsenal. When Arteta calls me, he tells me the project and explains how everything works. I didn’t even have to think about it, I wanted to be there. Since I arrived in England, I always paid a lot of attention to Arsenal” – David Raya speaking to Dazn as reported by Mundo Deportivo.
It seems like David Raya has already secured his place as main keeper for a long time. Now he needs a proper backup as Neto who is on loan will leave the club next year.
Arteta has developed a Spanish connection and is planning to bring another Spanish keeper. Espanyol star Joan Garcia is being linked with a move to North London club.
