Depay is adamant to stay at Barcelona and compete

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Memphis Depay is facing an uncertain future at Barcelona. The former Lyon man is feeling surplus to the demands of manager Xavi. The arrivals of Lewandowski and Raphinha in attack with the renewal of Dembele has made Memphis Depay’s future to be reconsidered. However, the Dutch International is adamant to stay and prove his worth to Xavi and his staff.

Depay has communicated to his mates that he will be staying at the club even if Barca goes on and sign more forwards. Depay was Barcelona’s main man when Griezmann left the club to join Atletico Madrid on loan. Coach Ronald Koeman was very well aware of Depay’s abilities and used him to his best. This resulted in Depay being Barcelona’s top scorer in a season where things didn’t go well for Barca.

However, the wind changed its direction when Xavi arrived. The Spaniard had a different style of play and wanted wide wingers on each wing with a classic authentic No. 9. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was signed for free from Arsenal and clearly had a big impact. Ferran Torres was also signed in the January window, which put Depay’s spot at risk.

What next for Memphis Depay?

It is still not clear as to what will happen with Memphis Depay this summer. Barcelona are willing to let him go for a reasonable fee. But the Dutchman is not agreeing to a move away from Camp Nou. With so much cash splashed by Barca in this window, Depay’s position seems to be taken by someone else. With 7-8 forwards for Barca this summer, it is not clear who will start for Xavi.

Different combinations have been tried in the pre-season by Xavi. The manager always reinstated how a good squad needs to have squad depth for every position. Barcelona seems to have got depth for every position now. With some clubs interested in Depay, the Dutchman may just join Juventus or a top premier league club. But he won’t be leaving Barcelona too easily.
