Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid by a 2-1 score line at the Wanda Metropolitano in the Madrid derby recently. The game is one of the most anticipated fixtures in the Spanish calendar and it lived up to the expectations. It was a close contest in which Real Madrid eventually triumphed.

Diego Simeone set up his team differently and dominated possession for the majority of the match. Atletico Madrid registered more shots on target than the reigning champions. Meanwhile, Real Madrid employed a more conservative game plan away from home.

Los Blancos were very clinical and caused problems for the Rojiblancos on the counterattack. The defending champions transitioned well from defence to attack throughout the game and scored both goals in a similar fashion.

Real Madrid impressed Diego Simeone on the day with their approach

The Atletico Madrid Manager said that the Los Blancos were very clinical and took advantage of their opportunities. He believes that the transition from defense to attack was very effective and gave credit to Carlo Ancelotti for drilling the side well.

Diego Simeone reflected on the match:

“I am left with the feeling of not having lost the bulk of the game despite [the] result. Their forcefulness is wonderful to see, a team that defends in a low block, and counterattacks. It reminds me of the team we had with Diego Costa, when they criticised us back then.”

The Argentine also took a jibe at the tactics when he mentioned the criticism received by him for similar tactics. It seems that Diego Simeone was slightly frustrated with Ancelotti who served the Argentine with his own medicine in this Madrid derby. Nonetheless, the tactics don’t matter if you get the result at the end of the day. And Real Madrid got the victory over their arch-rivals and sit pretty at the top of the table!
