About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

East Bengal defeated Mata Rukmani FC 2-0 in a Group A match of the Hero Indian Women’s League 2023 on Tuesday, May 2 at the TransStadia in Ahmedabad.

After losing the first match against Gokulam Kerala FC, this was the Kolkata team’s second consecutive victory in three matches.

Though the Red and Gold Brigade were the better team for the majority of the game, the Chhattisgarh team had a good chance to score in the 10th minute. Mata Rukmani might have taken an early lead if Priyanka Kashyap had not headed wide from close range from a Devika Yadav cross.

East Bengal thereafter gained control of the game, and the Hero IWL debutants ultimately converted on a corner opportunity in the 25th minute. East Bengal grabbed a 1-0 lead as striker Mousumi Murmu headed home Mamata Singh’s cross.

Mata Rukmani had another chance to score in the 39th minute when Ripika Korram had just custodian Keisham Melody Chanu to beat. However, the forward was unable to make a proper connection with the ball.

East Bengal came dangerously close to extending their lead before halftime. Jyotsna Bara of Mata Rukmani stopped Sulanjana Raul’s effort from the left side of the box. Laxmi Podiyami of Mata Rukmani saved Rimpa Haldar from scoring in the 71st minute. But Haldar found victory two minutes later when she overcame the custodian and tapped home to make it 2-0. Later, the midfielder was named Player of the Match.

Both teams came close to scoring in the last minutes of the game, but neither could convert. East Bengal have regained their groove after a sluggish start to the season, thanks to the victory. Mata Rukmani, on the other side, is still looking for their first points of the season as a result of the outcome.
