Arsenal’s sporting director Edu Gaspar has unexpectedly quit in what is a shocking turn of events for the club. A former Arsenal player himself, Edu had been influential in steering Arsenal in its direction during the last few years. It leaves the Gunners with a hole to fill as they face a Primera League test without him.
It began when Edu returned to Arsenal joining the club as technical director earlier in the summer of 2019. In November 2022, he was promoted to sporting director, taking on responsibility of a much larger role in the team’s operations. He has brought in Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Gabriel, Gabriel Jesus and Declan Rice during his tenure. On the pitch these players all became vital contributors but with pronounced levels of effectiveness.
But Edu couldn’t deliver major silverware for Arsenal. They have finished runners-up in the Premier League over the last two campaigns having failed to challenge the relentless Manchester City. Arteta’s first season as manager was pivotal thanks to Edu’s work and their combined efforts led to the FA Cup. However, the one thing that was not achieved was reclaiming the league title.
Arsenal already faces critical decisions as Edu bids farewell. In new terms, the club has to chart a course and Ayew believes it’s down to the club’s leadership. Including co-chair Josh Knoenke. That is the evolution that is Arsenal’s DNA and change is inevitable. But the succession plan will be key, for continuity but with a target of silverware. The managerial hope is that whoever follows in Edu’s footsteps. Will continue the man’s work and boost the side towards the title.
Edu Leaves Arsenal
Richard Garlick will become Arsenal’s managing director in the wake of Edu’s departure. When CEO Vinai Venkatesham left at the start of this season, Garlick took the reins.
It’s about youth development and astute signings and the Gunners are still sticking to the stance. With the season underway fans are eagerly waiting to see how the team performs with these changes. Will Arsenal once more challenge the Premier League elite?
In recent years, the Arsenal Football Club has greatly changed. And much of it has had to do with sporting director Edu Gaspar. From when he came back in 2019, Edu has changed the way that Arsenal recruits players. And has shaped the squad both in terms of the bodies on the pitch and the performance they have given.
Under Edu, Arsenal have had about £794million to spend on 36 new signings. The cost shows that the club is serious about rebuilding the side and fighting for the top. However, during this period. Arsenal not only had to break the transfer record twice but once was a West Ham United. And Declan Rice to £100 million in the summer of 2023 stands out for the big acquisition. Importantly, the club has also made £281 million by selling players. Making a well-balanced hand of big investments and astute sales.
His Successful Signings:
Several standout signings are down to Edu’s eye for talent. His successful recruitment strategy is illustrated by three players.
Gabriel Martinelli: Martinelli was brought to Arsenal just before Edu came on board. And his development has been very much part and parcel of Edu’s vision. And yet, the young forward, who boasts 70 goals in 189 appearances for only £6 million signed. Has played a major part in his team’s success.
William Saliba: A £27 million signing from Saint-Étienne. Saliba’s journey to the first team was long. But has been key to the emergence of the Premier League’s best defender.
Martin Ødegaard: On loan initially, Ødegaard’s permanent transfer, worth £30 million, has been a masterstroke. The player has become a creative heartbeat for the club as captain. And his absence during poor form has been felt.
