For Chelsea, Cole Palmer has been the best transfer under new owners. He has played some inspirational football at a team that let him down on multiple occasions. His transfer to Chelsea from Manchester City for 40mil pounds looks like a steal, but his 100-million-pound teammates haven’t shown the same promise. It looks way worse when you take into account, which England star Chelsea let go off at 14. Finding a player with the same playstyle has already costed them hundreds of millions of pounds but they have had no success. Whereas the player they let go for free at 14 was in the PFA team of the year, over Cole Palmer and others.
‘Cold’ Cole Palmer
Palmer has been the story of the season, his first season at Chelsea has been nothing short of exceptional. He has made a mockery of his price tag and played at a level that was unexpected from him. His dribbling and vision are top class, giving him time on the ball means game over for any opposition team. He carried the team last year, 33 goal contributions in the league was most by any player last season. Nicknamed ‘Cold’ Palmer, the 22 year old has shown that he has ice running through his veins. With Palmer’s brilliant season, Chelsea could only finish 6th. Cole Palmer put up a show every time he went on to the pitch, but lack of solid players around him was a big factor behind Chelsea not securing a berth in the UCL or the Europa League.
Caicedo and Enzo
Cole Palmer is sensational but that’s just the number 10, the other two midfielders have been disappointing. Enzo is decent but he does not look like a 100million player, the same is true for Caicedo. They are young but not inexperienced, Caicedo(22) has played 83 games in the premier league and Enzo(23) has played 49. They are extremely talented midfielders who can look world class on some days. But against big clubs, they lack composure, something that’s not a big ask from a 100 million player. Lack in the quality of 6s and 8s is one of the biggest reasons behind Chelsea’s mediocrity. With a midfield incapable of beating the press with ease, Chelsea’s inability to control tempo bites them quiet regularly. This is the reason behind Chelsea finishing 6th and 12th in the last two seasons. Cole palmer and his PFA young player of the year winning performance was the only bright spot at Chelsea last season. The story would’ve looked very different if they did not let Declan Rice leave at 14. Yes, Declan Rice.
Rice and Chelsea
After his father told him that Chelsea have decided to not offer him a contract, 14 year old Declan Rice felt devasted. He had been at the club since he was 8 and it was heartbreaking for him. The same day he went for trials to Fulham and then to West Ham. He became a world class player at West Ham and was eventually sold to Arsenal for 105 million pounds. In his debut season, he was brilliant, playing different roles in midfield under Arteta. He was solid all around and became a starter ever since he entered the dressing room. With 245 premier league appearances under his name at 25, he is everything that Chelsea needs. A young and experienced player who can play under pressure with confidence. Chelsea decided to move on from him at 14, every time Rice talks about this it looks like that the club meant something to him. Finding such players who play for the badge, in this era is tough. Chelsea robbed us of Declan Rice and Cole Palmer playing games together.
