English giants in the race for a young Portuguese talent

Another young star in making from Portugal is attracting attention from around the world. It is rumored that Premier League clubs are already interested in a young talent named Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP. The 17 year old forward have came through the youth ranks of Sporting. Quenda was promoted to the first team in 2024 and he has already made a mark in the world football with his brilliance.

Quenda has only appeared 7 times for the Os Leões. But he has already registered a goal against rival side FC Porto in the Supertaca final. His dribbling and ball holding abilities have made him one of the hottest prospect across the Europe. Along side his club level performances, Quenda also earned an international cap earlier this month during the Nations League fixtures. It made him the youngest ever Portuguese player to represent the nation.

Quenda has drawn the attention of English giants like Chelsea, Man United, Man City and Spurs during this window. However, it seems like the former twos are more than just interested.

Chelsea and United to compete for the youngster

Both Chelsea and United will be fighting for the 17-year-old Portuguese in the next transfer windows. The Blues are already in a project to sign highly-rated young talents from around the world. Since 2022 after the ownership was handed to Clearlake Capital, Chelsea have spent millions on these young prospects. The list includes the likes of- Estevao Willian, Romeo Lavia, Andrey Santos and others.

They believe in this process they can reduce their wage bills and they will also have the upcoming stars in their side. On the other hand Manchester United are also scouting superstars for the next generations. The Red Devils have already signed young guns like- Yoro, Samuel Lusale, Chido Obi and others this summer.

Quenda will be a great option for both of the club’s strategy. He can play anywhere up the line in the pitch. Whether as a winger or as a attacking midfielder. But there seems to be a problem for the English clubs to negotiate for Quenda.

According to the reports of HITC, Sporting have set a release clause of £84 million for the young Portuguese. Seems like the club have set such a high clause to fend off the interests from other club. There is a very low chance for top clubs to spend that much on a 17-year-old player who didn’t even had a top season yet. It will be interesting to see what happens in the near future. For now Quenda should focus on his game and keep performing consistently for the Os Leões.

Quenda’s first interaction with Cristiano Ronaldo

Every young Portuguese player in this generation grew up adoring Cristiano Ronaldo. Quenda isn’t an exception of that. He is also following the footsteps of Ronaldo as both of them started their career at Sporting. As Quenda selected for the national side, he met his idol in the Portugal camp during the Nations League fixtures.

In the pre match press conference with Ronaldo before the Croatia game, he shared his dressing room experience with youngsters. Ronaldo said,

Many of them are embarrassed to talk to me! A little while ago I was going up to my room and I saw the new boy, 17 years old, Quenda. I went to him and said, ” So, have you recovered from the game?” I saw that he was embarrassed.

Ronaldo claimed that young players like Quenda are nervous to talk to him as they see him as a father figure instead of an older brother. However, the El Bicho himself doesn’t have any problem to be a father figure to some as he mentioned he have been through same situation like them when he debuted for the national side at the age of 18. Ronaldo claimed no matter what, his role for the young players like Quenda will be the same, as he will continue to help those who comes in.
