Gameweek 10 of the English Premier League has ended and what a week it was. Comebacks, upsets, 6 pointers for the top of the table, and the relegation zone as well.
Manchester City were the best performers by a country mile after they battered Burnley 5-0. After a very dull start to the season, Pep Guardiola and Manchester City are slowly finding their form.
Their Rivals Manchester United weren’t that far behind either as they came back from 2-0 down to win 2-3 against home-team Southampton. The Red Devils became the first team in the Premier League to win 4 consecutive away games after trailing in each. This win was also their 8th consecutive away win.
The London Derby between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur turned out to be a goalless draw with both teams performing well defensively. That wasn’t the only disappointing fixture for London as Arsenal lost 1-2 at home to Wolves.
Merseyside clubs suffered this gameweek as well as Liverpool and Everton both dropped points. Liverpool were 1-0 up at Brighton away before they gave away a penalty in the injury time. The game ended 1-1 with Diogo Jota and Pascal Gross scoring. Everton lost at home to Leeds United.
The relegation 6 pointers saw West Brom win against a very poor Sheffield United. The two most inconsistent sides this season, Leicester City and Aston Villa, lost against Fulham and West Ham.
PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM OF THE WEEK:
SAM JOHNSTONE (WEST BROM)
West Brom goalkeeper has landed a spot in the FootballExpress Team of the Week after a splendid performance between the sticks. West Brom had a must-win game against Sheffield United as both were looking for a way out of the Relegation zone. Johnstone stepped up and kept a clean sheet ensuring West Brom their 3 points.
BENJAMIN MENDY (MANCHESTER CITY)
The young French left-back scored the 3rd goal in Manchester City’s 5-0 demolition of Burnley. Benjamin Mendy also kept a clean sheet while doing so, and that has landed him a spot in the team of the week.
THIAGO SILVA (CHELSEA)
The 36-year-old Thiago Silva has taken the Premier League by storm. After arriving from Paris, he has changed the look of the crumbling Chelsea defense. Keeping a clean sheet against the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min is no easy task.
ANGELO OGBONNA (WEST HAM)
West Ham had a very controversial win against Aston Villa. VAR was criticized yet again as Villa felt like they were robbed. This didn’t stop Angelo Ogbonna from having a good game as he scored the first goal of the game.
LUKE AYLING (LEEDS UNITED)
Leeds United took home all 3 points from their fixture against Everton. Luke Ayling was solid in defense, he also kept a clean sheet.
CONOR GALLAGHER (WEST BROM)
Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher scored the only game in West Brom’s first win of the season. The midfielder had a solid overall performance.
BRUNO FERNANDES (MANCHESTER UNITED)
After going 2 goals down against Southampton, Bruno stepped up and scored the 1st goal and assisted the 2nd one in the 3-2 comeback win.
KEVIN DE BRUYNE (MANCHESTER CITY)
After a World-Class 19/20 Premier League season, Kevin De Bruyne has hit the ground running again. The Belgian assisted 2 goals and almost scored one himself against Burnley.
EDINSON CAVANI (MANCHESTER UNITED)
El Matador came on and changed the game in Manchester United’s favour. Cavani assisted Bruno for the 1st goal and then scored a brace himself winning the game for The Red Devils. Comeback Hero.
PEDRO NETO (WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS)
Neto scored the first goal for Wolves in their 2-1 win over Arsenal. There was a time where this would have been a upset for Arsenal but now it is a routine win for Wolves.
RIYAD MAHREZ (MANCHESTER CITY)
Hattrick hero for Manchester City, Riyad Mahrez, will be the first name on the Team of the Week for every football fan.
PREMIER LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
There were 2 standout players this week in the Premier League namely Riyad Mahrez and Edinson Cavani. However, based on the impact these players had, Edinson ‘El Matador’ Cavani is our Premier League Player of the Week.
The Uruguayan had an unmatched impact in the game, his presence made the usually solid Southampton defense lose their bearings and lose their composure. However, his greatest achievement from the night was impressing Roy Keane.
