Erik Ten Hag signs a new contract with Man United

Manchester United gave Ten Hag the managerial role in 2022 after the Dutchman’s successful spell with Ajax. The first two seasons of the Dutchman’s spell at United have been filled with ups and downs. Often times Ten Hag’s future was uncertain and he was even reported close to being sacked. However the 54 year old manager has won two trophies in two season after ending United’s six year trophy drought. Recently Manchester United have offered Erik Ten Hag contract extension keeping him at the club until 2026.

Manchester United had a very bad 2023/24 season. The club had the lowest finish in 34 years as United finished on 8th position in the Premier League. United were very likely looking to miss the European competitions. Fortunately, the club put on a superb display in the FA Cup final against the Premier League champions in a Manchester derby. United defeated City in the final and thus securing their place in UEFA Europa League. Correspondingly Chelsea who finished on sixth position in Premier League were sent to conference league. Maybe this win became the saviour of Ten Hag earning him a contract extension.

Ten Hag’s contract extension has been announced on official Manchester United website. Initially, Ten Hag’s contract was until 2025 when the club signed him from Ajax. According to recent renewal, the Dutchman will stay at Manchester until the end of 2025/26 season. However there won’t be any pay rise and Ten Hag will still earn £173,000 per week or £9 million per season. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has placed his trust in Ten Hag once again but will expect a lot better results this season. Ten Hag will start the preparations of the pre-season on Monday at the Carrington training centre. He is expecting a lot of new faces along with bidding farewell to some of the existing stars.

After the contract renewal, Ten Hag took a moment to talk about his time in Manchester. The Dutchman said that looking back at the two years, United will reflect with pride on the two trophies won. Ten Hag added that United has been better than it was when he joined them. However Ten Hag doesn’t think he is done yet as he wants to challenge for the English and European titles. To conclude, the 54 year old manager said that the club has found complete unity and is strong commited to reach the goals.

Dan Ashworth, the new sporting director of United has backed Ten Hag and said that the manager is one of the most consistently successful coach in Europe. He added that the club has reviewed last season and came to the conclusion that Ten Hag is the best for the job.

Erik Ten Hag became the fifth permanent manager after the Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013. Before the Dutchman, David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunner Solskjaer had their spells with Red Devils. Except Jose Mourinho who won Europa league with the club, none really made an impact on the side.

In 2022, Ten Hag was offered the United job with a contract running until 2025. Ten Hag started his United career with a bitter note losing the first two games as United manager since 1921. However the club’s performances gradually improved and Red Devils finished the 2022/23 season at 3rd position securing the champions league football. In his first year as United manager, Ten Hag won EFL Cup ending United’s six years trophy drought.

However, the following season proved too bad for Ten Hag as the club recorded their lowest finish in league since 1990. Ten Hag still managed to win a trophy as United defeated their city rivals and premier league champions in FA Cup final. Ten Hag has managed 114 games for United an won 68 of those along with averaging 1.9 points per match.
