According to reports in Spain, Ferran Torres could leave FC Barcelona at the end of the season. The 24-year-old could be on his way back to the premier league next summer. Arsenal and Aston Villa are teams that are looking to acquire his services. The two clubs will offer him different roles and will have to pay a handsome fee for his signature. Even though Ferran Torres has been inconsistent throughout his career in certain aspects, he will come in handy for The Gunners. Villa on the other hand will surely look at him as one of their future stars.
After rising through the ranks at Valencia, he made a move to the blue side of Manchester in the summer of 2020. He joined the Spanish club as a six-year-old and left at the age of twenty, spending fourteen years with them. He was regarded as a signing for the future but due to inconsistent performances, his minutes never looked secure. After a not-so-good first season, FC Barcelona came knocking on his door.
Pep Guardiola in a press conference where he confirmed that the player will be leaving said that he did not try to stop him. If Barcelona or Real Madrid want a player, it’s difficult to keep them. Fewer minutes during the period before Christmas meant that Ferran Torres moved to Barcelona in January 2022. He has been good on some days, and not good on some after moving back to Spain. His employers are open to listen to offers for the twenty-four-year-old with Arsenal and Villa being the top contenders. Let’s look at what he can do for both the clubs.
Ferran Torres at Arsenal
The Spanish attacker has premier league experience. He arrived at Manchester City after Mikel Arteta left the season before. Arteta was Pep’s assistant for three years and his system at Arsenal is influenced by his time at City. He has spoken many times about how much he respects Pep since his childhood and is grateful for everything he has done for him.
Pep was the one who wanted him from Valencia. Ferran spoke about how talking to Pep, made him want to sing even more. Arteta has over the years, collected his own bunch of ex-City players. Oleksandr Zinchenko, Gabriel Jesus, and recently Raheem Sterling. It can be said that he likes to have Pep’s players. But the problem is that none of them are close to sniffing the starting lineup, and the reason behind them leaving Man City was also the same.
Ferran Torres left Man City for minutes and a move to Barcelona hasn’t gone according to plan I would say. He will be someone who can come off the bench and play, he won’t start over Trossard, Martinelli, Havertz, or Saka. He will be a backup and a move to Arsenal won’t provide him a fresh start. A move to Aston Villa though, makes a lot more sense.
A move to Aston Villa makes more sense
Villa have a few tough decisions to make around Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran. They are both top strikers but the two haven’t featured together. Morgan Rogers has started every game in the league playing slightly behind Ollie Watkins. Morgan Rogers is a hard worker, he presses hard, can dribble past players, and is overall a very good complimentary piece around a finisher like Watkins. This has led to Jhon Duran coming off the bench and being linked to a move away.
Putting Ferran Torres in the mix can allow for Villa to move on from one of their strikers. But, expecting him to replace either of them is asking a bit too much. If Villa doesn’t sell a striker and get him, then he won’t be playing as much. Ferran Torres is not a great presser and his decision-making in the final third has been questionable. Leon Bailey is a very good player and Torres starting over him is tough. Villa should look to solve the Jhon Duran situation and not look to add more problems.
