The Blues have had a very poor performance in their last five league games where they only got 4 points. They lost 3 of those games and won only one game against West Ham United but the performance wasn’t good in that match.
Lampard’s boys had a great start to the season after a brilliant summer transfer window where they spent over £200 million in the pandemic situation. They bought Timo Werner and Kai Havertz but they struggled with their form in this season so far.
Chelsea had 9 games unbeaten streak and got 19 points out of those games in the early stages of the league and they were one of those title contenders but they fell from that situation and right now they are 7 points off the top of the table.
The 3-1 defeat away to a poor Arsenal in the London derby was a particularly low point and they were held 1-1 by Aston Villa at home in their last game.
Chelsea is sitting 6th in the league with 26 points in 16 games. Manchester City has the same number of points in 14 games and standing in 8th place in goal difference ahead of their big clash on Sunday.
Lampard said in his pre-match press conference before Manchester City game:
“I’m confident in us as a team because I know when we play, particularly at Stamford Bridge, we have the opportunity to beat anybody.
“Manchester City are right at the top so, when we beat them 2-1 after restart, it was a difficult game in which we had to suffer at times because they’re such a good possession-based team. I know we have to be at our best to win because of the level of opposition.
“In terms of weaknesses, I don’t see them. They’re a very strong outfit, they’re very well managed, they don’t concede many and they have lots of threats in attacking areas. If we’re at our best then we can make weaknesses against any team.
“We have to keep our energy levels up. We were slow against Arsenal but it need to be quick against Manchester City. We need to be disciplined against them defensively.”-Frank Lampard
The situation of Manchester City ahead of clash with Lampard’ Chelsea:
Manchester City have their problems in the squad. A coronavirus outbreak at the club had put the fixture in doubt, with City’s match against Everton scheduled for last Monday called off, and they will have five players missing at Stamford Bridge. Guardiola will have to rely on the depth of the squad.
Apart from that, we haven’t seen the free-flowing football from Manchester City which we used to see from Pep’s team. They are struggling with scoring goals after the injury to Sergio Aguero.
The Citizens have already lost 2 games and 16 points in this early stage. The defeat to Leicester City at home by 5-2 were very humiliating for City fans.
Manchester City will have to win the match on Sunday to go up the ladder and be the title contender after a slow start where Liverpool and Manchester United are already 7 points ahead of them at the first and second respectively.
Frank Lampard will have to win the game as well after the bad run of form otherwise, Lampard will be under tremendous pressure where Chelsea don’t think twice to sack their manager who doesn’t deliver on the pitch.
