Frenkie De Jong is ‘disgusted’ with Barcelona following the transfer saga

Frenkie De Jong

Frenkie De Jong was left ‘disgusted’ by how Barcelona tried to seal a move away for him. Barcelona informed the decision to put him on the market over a phone call. This is why the Dutch international felt somewhat uneasy with how the club dealt with him.

Frenkie De Jong transfer chaos

Following the intention to bring in new players, the club had decided to part ways with De Jong. The main reason behind this was the financial restrictions imposed by the league on the club. Due to the overwhelming wage bill, Barcelona could not register any of the signings they intended to make. Barcelona figured that Frenkie was one of the hot prospects in the world. The club knew that the player has a high value in the market with several clubs closely following him.

While releasing him would free much space in the wage bill, any deal would have also brought in a handsome sum. The club had held onto a minimum fee of 80 million euros in case any club approached for the player.

The closest to the deal were Manchester United and Chelsea. Both the clubs had offered near about the sum Barcelona was asking for. The only stumbling block was De Jong’s intentions to stay at Camp Nou. Frenkie De Jong was adamant about staying in the club and succeeding under Xavi.  Therefore, a move for him fell through.

De Jong has been a substitute in three of the four league games, only playing a part in the later stages of the game. While Xavi has assured that he still favors Frenkie as a starter. The lack of game time might be a statement from the club either to force him out or to force him into taking a pay cut to help the club.
