Gayle to Middlesbrough is uncertain as of now

About Football Express India - Indian Super League - I-League

Dwight Gayle was close to leaving Newcastle United this summer. Championship side Middlesbrough was interested in signing the 32-year-old. Boss Eddie Howe gave the media an idea about what he felt about the potential move. He insisted that Gayle needs playing time in his career and more than deserves it.

Middlesbrough has been in the race to sign Gayle earlier this summer but were not eager to pay their high wages of Gayle. The forward has been the permission to leave the club and has been training with the u-23. He just featured for 5 games of Newcastle United in 2021/22 playing a total of 13 minutes.

Eddie Howe did not pick the Englishman in the team’s tour in Australia as the CF was in talks with Middlesbrough throughout the time. It is still unclear as to why his loan move to the Championship has stalled. The salary issue has been identified as the major issue. Newcastle are very eager to get Gayle off their squad list. The club has a surplus of attackers at the moment and are looking for a squad overhaul.

Eddie Howe has his say on Gayle’s Transfer decision

Howe said:

“I have had a couple of conversations with Dwight. At the end of last season, we had a good conversation. We made him aware of the situation, for his own benefit, so he could take his career into its next phase.”

“I was very honest with him. I said from day one, I had a great relationship with him, and I love working with him. He was brilliant for the team last year. Because of all those things, he deserved the utmost respect and honesty from me. And I wanted to give him the best chance to find his next home.”
