FC Barcelona are drowned in financial problems this summer and were unable to register their new signings. However, the mission of registering Memphis Depay, and Eric Garcia has been successful, and all thanks to Gerard Pique. Barcelona confirmed on Saturday that Pique has taken a substantial pay cut to accommodate the new signings.

Barcelona have gone through a lot this season as they lost Lionel Messi this summer due to La Liga‘s salary cap rules. And it would have been worse if they couldn’t register Depay and Garcia before their opening league match against Real Sociedad. But Pique has saved them from that horrible situation by taking a pay cut.

According to Sport, the pay cut will be applicable for this season only, and in return, Pique’s contract which runs until 2024 is absolutely ensured. Pique has already turned 34 this year and has not many years left in his playing career. However, following this pay-cut it is confirmed that Pique will be staying in Barcelona until 2024.

That’s not all about Pique’s heroic, the defender also had put on an impressive performance against Real Sociedad in their league opener. Pique scored the opening goal for Barcelona and helped by winning 4-2 in the first match. After the victory, Pique talked about his decision of taking a pay-cut in the post-match interview. He said “I was born and raised here. I have done what I had to do, with the reduction. We have been in contact with the captains and I know that they will also take the step. It is a matter of time.” So, Barcelona have started their life without Messi and it has started in a positive way.
