Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus has made himself unavailable for the upcoming Euro 2020 for Germany. The German will not be part of Joachim Low’s side this summer for the delayed competition.

Reus announced his decision through his social media handle. He stated that the decision was made to help himself recover. The European Championship will be held from 11th June to 11th of July.

Marco Reus became the second high-profile player to stay away from the German national squad. Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has earlier ruled out of the competition to undergo knee surgery. Reus has made his decision after discussing with his national team manager Joachim Low.

In the social media statement, Reus mentioned that he wanted to focus on the next season with Dortmund and required proper recovery for his body after a “very intense” campaign. He also wished his manager and German side for a successful campaign and told that he will be cheering for them throughout.

Injuries have been a recurring theme in Reus’s career. He missed Germany’s World Cup-winning campaign of 2014 as well as the Euro 2016 due to injuries. Reus in his statement mentioned that the decision to drop from the national side was very difficult. “I’m always full of pride when I play for my country” -said, Reus.

Marco Reus has played 44 times for Germany and has scored 13 times. His unavailability will affect the German side. However, one has to respect his decision to take care of himself, especially considering his injury record.
