Pep Guardiola might have gotten a 2-year contract extension but it’s late November and Manchester City is still in the bottom half of the table.
The concern is that old failings have not been addressed and new weaknesses are emerging in a once flawless team.
City’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur was the first time that Manchester City have failed to score in a Premier League game this season.
The old fluency has been lacking. The previous five games had yielded only five goals – one in each – and it was a real struggle against Spurs. This has left former champions with just 12 points in the opening 8 league fixtures, sitting at 13th position in the league table.
But Pep has taken the blame upon himself and believes City’s lowest goal return at the start of a Premier League campaign for 14 years is down to his failure to find a fluid way for his team to play.
Guardiola denied that the lack of league goals is down to lack of courage before goal.
“The players are so brave,” he said. “The reason [for this] is the manager – I have to find a way, use their qualities and adapt. I have to adjust something, to let them feel we can create more. It’s in my hands to help.– Pep Guardiola on Man City’ form
Pep Guardiola updates on Aguero’ return:
Everyone would assume that Sergio Aguero, Manchester City’s top scorer, would be back to solve goalscoring problems but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
City forward is struggling with injuries this season, the main problem for their lack of goals in front.
Guardiola was confident of Aguero’s return to full fitness but stated will for it.
“We want him to come back to training again so he can recover a good feeling in knee, this is the most important thing.
“Will wait for him and take it one step at a time. We have many, many games to play this season and we’ll need him. What we want is him to recover in his best condition.”– Pep Guardiola on Sergio Aguero
Aguero missed the end of last season and the start of the current campaign after undergoing knee surgery in June. He has since had another lay-off after suffering a hamstring injury last month.
