Arsenal have already started their new season with a win. They defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers in the opening match of Premier League. Gunners want to finally win the league title for the first time after two decades. Last time Arsenal won Premier League was in 2004 where they were invincibles. In the past two seasons, Arsenal came very close but fell short. Mikel Arteta finally wants to end the drought and bring the title back to The Emirates. For that, he wanted to sign some top quality players. He wanted to sign defender, keeper, midfielder, winger and striker. However, Gunners are now said to not go after striker.
Out of the five positions Arteta wanted, the club has only been able to get two as for now. They have signed David Raya as their permanent keeper. In addition, Calafiori came from Bologna for £39 million. Arsenal are now set to finalize the deal for Mikel Merino. Arsenal fans were hoping for two more players to join them. However, it is said that the North London club will not sign a striker. There is nothing about a winger but many names were linked. Nico Williams, Kingsley Coman and Raphinha were some of the top targets of Arsenal.
Gunners to not go after a striker this summer
Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus were both linked with move away from the club. However, Jesus was said to stay at the club but Nketiah is still close to exit. Many clubs were linked with Nketiah, but were not able to meet the demands of Arsenal. Arsenal wanted to sign a new striker after parting ways with Nketiah. However, now it has been reported by Football Insider that Arsenal are against the signing of striker this summer. It is not because Nketiah not finding a new club. Even if Nketiah leaves before the transfer markey is over, Gunners will not go for a central forward.
Mikel Arteta believes in his attacking players. He said in the press conferance that he is lucky to have such good players. In addition, Kai Havertz has been very good since starting to play as striker. Arsenal were linked with big names like Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen. However, they have a huge release clause. In addition, less than two weeks are remaining for the transfer market to close. Arsenal like to take time before signing any player. They do not like to operate in hurry. Hence, Gunners now seem to scrape off striker from their summer transfer wishlist.
Who will play as striker this season
Kai Havertz started the first match of the season as the striker. Just like last season, he was very good in this position. It seems very likely that Havertz will be the first choice striker for Arteta. In addition, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus can play as strikers too. However, they are very likely to be used as backup for Havertz. Arsenal had a very good opening match at The Emirates. They defeated Wolves by 2-0 displaying their high quality in both attack and defense. Havertz who started as a striker scored the first goal of the season for the Gunners.
Havertz scored the opener after receiving an assist from Bukayo Saka. Later in second half, Saka scored a goal after receiving an assist from Havertz. They both combined on two occasions to claim all three points. Martinelli started the match as a left winger. Both Martinelli and Havertz played the whole match, whilst Saka was substituted in 80th minute. Leandro Trossard came on for Saka. Later, Jesus came in as substitute for Declan Rice and played 5 minutes plus added time for Arsenal. Saka won the player of the match award for his awesome performance and Havertz was the best second player for Arsenal.
