Arsenal were in hot pursuit of midfield duo Houssem Aouar and Thomas Partey in the summer. After signing Partey on transfer deadline day, Ian Wright has urged Arsenal not to stop in their chase of Houssem Aouar.
Arsenal failed to sign Aouar in the summer
Arsenal were in contact with Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais all summer to sign Houssem Aouar. Transfer talks broke down as Arsenal’s talks with Lyon, in particular their president Jean-Michel Aulas, did not end on agreeable terms before the transfer deadline.
The 22-year-old midfielder decided to stay put at Lyon and Arsenal contented themselves with securing Thomas Partey’s signature on deadline day. Speaking a day after the transfer window closed in October, Aouar explained his reasons for staying at Lyon.
“I felt that I could still bring something to this team and to this club. That’s why I have made the choice to continue my adventure with Lyon. I hope we will get up and find our form again quickly.”-Aouar on staying at Lyon
Ian Wright wants Arsenal to go all-in for the Lyon midfielder amidst ‘attacking crisis’
Ian Wright believes that Arsenal needs creativity on the pitch to ensure that such results repeat themselves in the future. Speaking to Premier League Productions after Arsenal’s 1-0 win against Manchester United, Wright spoke about the future of Arsenal’s midfield under manager Mikel Arterta:
‘If he(Arteta) can continue to improve, like players improve with his coaching, and then he’s then able to add to that with Aouar, who they’re trying to get in the midfield alongside Partey, then you’ve got someone who can create for the forwards.”
North London giants have the best defence in the league, but have faltered going forward. The Gunners have found the net only 9 times in 7 games. Star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored just twice all season, with both goals coming from penalties.
In the midst of such an attacking crisis, Arsenal could use a creative midfielder like Aouar. Arsenal filled the void in defensive-midfield with Thomas Partey. So now, signing a creative playmaker should be at the top of their shopping list in January.
Arsenal recently lost creative quantities Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Oxlade Chamberlian and many more. Mesut Ozil, their best creative force, also failed to gain trust of manager Arteta since last season.
