Mumbai City FC bid adieu to 12 players for the upcoming ISL campaign

Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Mumbai City FC has released 12 players from their squad ahead of the upcoming edition of the league.

“Mumbai City can confirm that twelve members of our 2019-20 squad – Davinder Singh, Kunal Sawant, Modou Sougou, Mohammed Rafique, Alen Deory, Mato Grgić, Diego Carlos, Amine Chermiti, Mohamed Larbi, Serge Kevyn, Surchandra Singh, and Keenan Almeida – have left the club,” a club statement read.

The Islanders released Davinder Singh and experienced goalkeeper Kunal Sawant. Both players were a part of the club for three seasons since they joined in 2017.

Davinder joined the club from Punjabi University and went on to make 10 appearances while Kunal failed to make a single appearance up to date. Both players are now free agents until they find a club, will sort out new options ahead of the upcoming ISL edition.

Foreign players Serge Kevyn, Diego, and Amine Chermiti will also be free agents after their contracts were not extended by the club while Mohamed Labri signed for French third-tier club SO Cholet and Mato Grgic made a move to the Netherlands.

Indian midfielders Mohammed Rafique and Surchandra Singh signed for SC East Bengal after their stints with Mumbai City FC. They played for the club for 2 years and 1 year respectively.

The club also decided not to extend the contract of its star foreign player Modou Sougou though he netted 15 goals during his time at the club. The 35-year-old right-winger served the club for two seasons.

The 7th edition of the league is set to commence on 20th October with Kerala Blasters going up against ATK Mohun Bagan on opening day. While Mumbai City will play their first game against NorthEast United FC a day later at Tilak Maidan.
