SC East Bengal vs ATK Mohun Bagan: Preview, The Maiden Kolkata Derby in ISL

SC East Bengal is set to face ATK Mohun Bagan on 27th November 2020 in the Indian Super League fixture at the Tilak Maidan, Vasco. This will be the first game for East Bengal in the ISL, whereas ATKMB won their first game against Kerala Blasters 1-0 on an opening day.

Let’s take a deeper look into the first Kolkata derby of Indian Super League.

SC East Bengal vs ATK Mohun Bagan: Preview

ATKMB will head into the game with confidence and hope to maintain their 100% start to ISL season. Antonio Lopez Habas, head coach of ATKMB, confirmed that Michael Soosairaj is out for the rest of the season after the left-winger suffered a ruptured ACL injury against the Kerala Blasters.

The Spaniard said he is quite happy with his team’s display against Kerala and said their game will improve as the tournament progresses.

On the other hand, Robbie Fowler, the head coach of East Bengal, warned the players not to be too enthusiastic in such a high-profile battle; rather advised them to proceed sensibly.

Fowler labeled themselves as underdogs ahead of the game, he also reminded that often underdogs come out on top. The former Liverpool forward said that he is focused on East Bengal only and insisted that their team spirit is high and together they can set a benchmark and announce themselves in the ISL.

Fowler pointed out that ATKMB do not know about them as much as they do about ATKMB, although Habas denied that this would be an advantage for SCEB.

However, there is one thing they both agreed on, that is both the teams will give their 100% in the 90 minutes on the pitch for the badge on their shirt. So we can expect to see a mouthwatering neck to neck clash at the Tilak Maidan.

SC East Bengal vs ATK Mohun Bagan Team News:

Michael Soosairaj suffered a ruptured ACL in the opening game. He will not be available so Habas could opt for Subhashis Bose to play as a left wingback in his 3-5-2 system.

Habas is tipped to start with the same formation he played against Kerala for SCEB. The defence of Pritam, Tiri, and Sandesh Jhingan was solid throughout the game and expected to start again.

The midfield didn’t perform too well in the last game, but Habas is optimistic that they’d improve so the same midfield is expected with Subhashish in place of injured Soosairaj. Up front David Williams may start for ATKMB ahead of Edu Garcia.

East Bengal have no major injury issues as their head coach confirmed ahead of the game. They are expected to start with three at the back and two central midfielders in Lyngdoh and Steinmann with two wide midfielders in Narayan Das and Chullova. Front three of Pilkington, Maghoma and Balwant are tipped to start.

Predicted Line-ups:

SC East Bengal(3-4-3): GK: Debjit Majumder; DF: Scott Neville, Daniel Fox, Rana Gharami; MF: Lalramchullova, Matti Steinmann, Eugeneson Lyngdoh, Narayan Das; FW: Anthony Pilkington, Jacques Maghoma, Balwant Singh.

ATK Mohun Bagan(3-5-2): GK: Arindam Bhattacharya; DF: Sandesh Jhingan, Tiri, Pritam Kotal; MF: Subhashish Bose, Javi Hernandez, Carl McHugh, Pronay Halder, Prabir Das; FW: David Williams, Roy Krishna.

Score Prediction:

As ATK Mohun Bagan started their campaign well against Kerala Blasters, they have momentum. Also, the lack of pre-season may affect the performance of East Bengal, as Fowler showed concern.

But nothing can be said about the Kolkata derby in advance. So at the end our prediction for the game is:

SC East Bengal 1-3 ATK Mohun Bagan.
