Jamie Carragher spoke very highly about one Arsenal duo while writting for The Telegraph. He wrote that the duo can make their way in the Premier League hall of fame very soon. Carragher compared them with two examples and also gave them advice to reach legendary status. The Arsenal duo in discussion is their centre back duo of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.
Saliba and Gabriel have formed a solid partnership at the back and are acting as the pillars of Arsenal. They only conceded 29 goals in the Premier League last season which is less than anyone else in the league. Both are still very young and clearly have a lot more to offer.
Jamie Carragher praises Saliba and Gabriel for forming an unbreachable unit
Firstly, Jamie Carragher compared the Arsenal players with the greatest defensive duos in Premier League history. He wrote that the Arsenal duo can be like John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho or Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
Former Liverpool star wrote that Chelsea and Man United were strong because of these duos. He ranked the Chelsea duo at number one position. The Chelsea stars only conceded 15 goals in 2004/05 season. Later they conceded only 22 goals in the next season.
Ferdinand and Vidic also conceded only 22 goals in the 2007/08 season. Carragher wrote that these duos were great because both the players were equal. These players were perfect partners for each other.
Later, Jamie gave some more examples from all over Europe before writting back about Premier League defenders. He wrote that Vincent Kompany, Virgil Van Dijk and Jaap Stam were also very good. But they did not had a perfect and equal partner. These players were the main ones and the other looked up to them.
Carragher tipped Saliba and Gabriel to win major trophy like Premier League of Champions League to crave their name in hall of fame list. Even though Saliba gets more praise, Carragher thinks that the Arsenal duo are equal.
Carragher shared one more important aspect in Arsenal’s defence
Lastly, Carragher thinks that Gunners are strong in defence due to Declan Rice in front of them. He gave the example of Claude Makelele who used to protect Chelsea defence. As per Carragher, the Arsenal midfield will play a key role against City on Sunday just like last season.
Last season, Arteta played Jorginho and Rice in middle and told them to focus more on defending. They game ended 0-0 and Arsenal were happy with the result. Gunners will hope to claim all three points against City at The Etihad. Their aim is to take City down and lift the League title for the first time since 2004.
