Joan Garcia transfer saga : what went wrong for Arsenal

Arsenal made total five signings this summer. On the other hand, many players left the club. David Raya has been signed on permanent basis which caused Aaron Ramsdale to leave the club. Ramsdale joined Southampton on the deadline day. In addition, Karl Hein has also joined Real Valladolid on loan. This made Gunners to sign Norberto Neto as a backup keeper. However, Neto was not the first choice replacement of Arsenal as they tried to sign Joan Garcia from Espanyol.

What caused Arsenal to miss out the signing of Joan Garcia

Gunners were confident to sign Joan Garcia. However, they were unable to meet the demands of Espanyol. It is said that the deal failed due to miscommunication between the parties involved. This resulted as a huge disappointment for Arsenal. Garcia was also interested to join Gunners and was also said to have agree the personal terms. However, the issue was due to the financial demands and payment structure.

Firstly, Garcia had a release clause set at €20 million. However, it rose to €30 million in August. According to The Athletic, Arsenal were confident to sign Garcia on lower fee. They wanted to wait until the sale of Aaron Ramsdale. Ramsdale joined Southampton on the deadline day. Later, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Gunners submitted two bids to sign Garcia on the deadline day.

Arsenal submitted a second bid of €20 million plus add-ons to sign Garcia. However, Espanyol rejected the bid and asked Arsenal to trigger the full release clause. In addition, the release clause in Spain needs to be paid full upfront unlike in Premier League where you can pay in installments. This means Gunners needed to pay full £25.2 million on the deadline day itself. As a result, the deal failed. Instead, Arsenal opted to sign Norberto Neto on loan.
