Liverpool central defender Joe Gomez suffered a serious knee injury during a training session with England Nation Team. This is another big blow for the Reds, who recently lost right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold to injury.
The 23-year-old English defender was the only fit senior centre-back available for the manager Jurgen Klopp, considering Joel Matip was rushed on his return from injury. Matip was called early from his injury but looked fatigued in a recent fixture against Manchester City.
First choice centre-back Virgil Van Dijk has been ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury suffered in the Merseyside derby. Makeshift centre-back Fabinho also suffered the injury against FC Midtjylland, making it worse for Klopp.
Liverpool also had goalkeeper Alisson Becker sidelined for a month at the early start of the season. New midfield signing Thiago Alcantara, Sadio Mane, and Naby Keita also missed plenty of minutes, after testing positive for Covid-19.
Now both Alexander-Arnold and Gomez out to injury, Liverpool fans will be questioning regaining the Premier League title.
Merseyside giants sit at 3rd position in the league table with just a point behind leaders Leicester City. They are facing Brendon Rodgers’ side after November International fixtures. It will be a nightmare for Liverpool fans, who are now confident that this season will not be the same as the last one.
Liverpool dominated last season by winning the Premier League title, with record 18 points over 2nd placed Manchester City. But with consistent injuries, this season will not be easy for fans and Jurgen Klopp.
Options for Klopp after losing Gomez and Alexander-Arnold to injuries:
Joe Gomez was expected to replace Alexander-Arnold on the right side of defense but now it’s not possible after Gomez’s injury. Liverpool and Klopp have some options to cover both English international but all are young and inexperienced.
Wales international Neco Williams is now the direct replacement of Alexander-Arnold, who will be unavailable for four weeks.
The 19-year-old Rhys Williams is most likely to replace Joe Gomez to partner with Joel Matip in the next few fixtures. Liverpool academy youngster has impressed everyone since his induction in first-team after Van Dijk ruled out.
Nathaniel Phillips is another promising option for Klopp but he cannot play in the Champions League fixture, was not registered due to transfer speculations.
Both Williams and Phillips have impressed on the pitch with minutes they got this season. But they are inexperienced defenders with lot of potential, not a sollution to Liverpool’s defensive problems.
January transfer window is getting close, and Klopp has already linked with defensive targets. FC Schalke 04 defenders Malick Thiaw and Ozan Kabak both are potential targets for Liverpool in January.
Wolverhampton and Wanderers skipper Conor Coady is also linked with Anfield move as a replacement of Van Dijk. Coady is graduated from Liverpool academy and has played one game for the Reds. He is now one of the best centre-back in the league, recently made debut for England.
