Chelsea have a new penalty-taker as Timo Werner and Jorginho sort it out

Chelsea have a new penalty-taker in Timo Werner, manager Frank Lampard has revealed in the post-match conference following Chelsea’s win against Rennes. The West London giants cruised to a 3-0 victory against the Ligue 1 side in their Champions League fixture.

The game featured a brace from Chelsea’s new summer signing Timo Werner, as the German netted twice from the spot. Both of Werner’s penalty-kicks came at a time when the Blues regular penalty-taker Jorginho was still on the pitch.

Ever since Eden Hazard’s departure to Real Madrid in the summer of 2019, midfielder Jorginho has been on penalty duty. The ex-Napoli midfielder has scored 9 penalties for Chelsea since the start of the 2019/20 season and missed two.

Jorginho’s latest goals from the penalty came in a 4-0 drubbing of London rivals Crystal Palace on 3rd October. The Italian took both the spot-kicks when Chelsea were in a commanding lead. Timo Werner was yet to open his account for Chelsea in the Premier League, and the fans felt that Jorginho could have offered the penalties to Werner in order to build the 24-year-old striker’s confidence.

Lampard praises Jorginho for letting Timo Werner take penalties

Jorginho shows professionalism, offers the penalty to Timo Werner

Jorginho was seen offering the penalty to striker Timo Werner when the German was tripped in the box by Rennes defender Dalbert Henrique in the 10th minute of the match.

The ex-Leipzig forward dispatched his spot-kick with ease to make it 1-0 on the night. Dalbert’s nightmare continued as he conceded a second penalty, this time through a handball. The Brazilian left-back was sent-off, and Timo Werner scored his second penalty-kick of the match.

Frank Lampard reveals he asked Jorginho to step away from penalty duty

In the post-match interview following the win against Rennes, Lampard revealed how Jorginho’s penalty miss against Krasnodar made him take Jorginho off penalty duty.

“It’s more missing a couple recently that I felt it was time to change. Jorgi’s answer was as professional as I’d expect. He only wants to score them but he was fine with that. If Timo takes them as well as today he’ll be happy. I’m happy he scored. Timo is as it stands now but of course, he needs to keep scoring them. Today he did it very well.”

Jorginho earlier missed a crucial penalty against Liverpool where the 10-men Blues went on to lose 0-2. It is now expected that Chelsea’s £47.6 million signing Timo Werner will be on official spot-kick duty from hereon.

Chelsea’s next assignment is against Sheffield United in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge, with both Werner and Jorginho in line to start. The Blues will be in need of their quality after Kai Havertz tested positive for the Covid-19 earlier this week.
