Leicester City piled on more misery over an erratic Chelsea side as they defeated them comfortably by 2-0. With the win, Leicester is on top of the table, which they earned deservingly. On the other hand, Chelsea drops to 8th in the Premier League table.
Before the Liverpool vs Manchester United match, Jurgen Klopp had said that The Red Devils are not the underdogs. He was absolutely true. Everyone was busy comparing Manchester City, Liverpool, and Manchester United as the favourites to lift the trophy, but they forgot about The Foxes who were working silently under their radar.
With an early goal from Oninye Ndidi and a goal just before half-time from James Maddison, Leicester did enough to get the win. Leicester has now won their first 3 matches at the start of a calendar year which they last did in 2014.
It is just a matter of time before Frank Lampard gets sacked. His heavy spending in the summer has not provided any improvement in their performances.
LEICESTER CITY PLAYER RATINGS AGAINST CHELSEA:
KASPER SCHMEICHEL – 6/10
The experienced goalkeeper had a decent distribution in the game. He was hardly tested but made sure the minor mistakes weren’t made. This also was his 400th appearance for Leicester City.
TIMOTHY CASTAGNE – 7.5/10
Another brilliant display from the Belgian as he was working continuously on the right flank. Made some promising runs along with providing excellent crosses. Defensively, he was the best with plenty of successful tackles.
WESELY FOFOANA – 8/10
The 20-year old defender made a completely experienced display. He was keeping the opposition’s attackers at bay and made brilliant tackles and clearances.
JOHNY EVANS – 6/10
Unlike his defensive partner, the experienced player was satisfactory. He made some clearances, but he made a clumsy challenge on Christian Pulisic. He was lucky as VAR overturned the penalty decision as the tackle was made slightly outside the box.
JAMES JUSTIN – 7/10
He was equally impressive as his fellow defenders. Made runs down the left side and was equally good at the back.
ONINYE NDIDI – 7.5/10
The most unexpected goal scorer for the team. He struck from outside the box that hit the post and went in after he received the ball from Harvey Barnes. After scoring, he went back to do his given job as a defensive midfielder.
MARC ALBRIGHTON – 6.5/10
Displayed a routine performance with plenty of offensive chances. He played the brilliant cross that led to James Maddison’s goal. He will be claiming the assist too.
YOURI TIELEMANS – 6/10
Another player with a routine display. He made important tackles to win back the ball on various occasions. He was moving the ball around in the midfield with no mistakes.
JAMES MADDISSON – 8.5/10 (MOTM)
The English player continued his great form as he scored yet another goal. He has been crucial for his team and has now scored 3 goals in 3 consecutive games.
HARVEY BARNES – 7/10
Unlucky to have mistimed his shot for goal, but lucky enough to have claimed the assist from that shot. His shot was collected by Ndidi who scored the goal. Other than that, he was energetic enough in the game, with plenty of run-ins.
JAMIE VARDY – 6/10
Not every day can be a Sunday, right? Jamie Vardy didn’t have his usual performance but he made some adept run creating chances for the 5-man midfield to exploit.
RICARDO PERIERA – 5/10
Came in for Albrighton in the 76th minute. He was out injured for a long period of time and this was his return debut. Made a promising display given the fact he returned from an injury.
AYOZO PEREZ – 5/10
He hardly had any promising touches that would make an impact. He replaced Maddison in the 76th minute.
KELECHI IHEANACHO – N/A
Was introduced really late in the game. He replaced Vardy in the 88th minute.
CHELSEA PLAYER RATINGS AGAINST LEICESTER CITY:
EDOUARD MENDY – 5/10
Was helpless in both the goals scored. But he made a few decent saves to keep the match alive. He is still not confident with his feet.
REECE JAMES – 5/10
His return to the squad was uninspiring. He was giving in awful crosses. Also, he was to blame for the second goal they conceded as he was out of position.
ANTONIO RUDIGER – 5/10
Another person to be blamed for the second goal. He also had a bad performance and was giving a lot of space for the opposition to explot.
THIAGO SILVA – 6/10
The only firm player at the back for Chelsea. Was doing everything in his power to get the ball moving forward. But his best display was he kept Vardy under his control.
BEN CHILWELL – 5.5/10
His return to his old club was not that welcoming. He was continuously troubled on the left by Castagne and Albrighton.
MATEO KOVACIC – 6/10
He did his part well by winning plenty of possessions. The formation was such that the opposition could dominate the midfield. But he cannot be blamed for that.
MASON MOUNT – 7/10
Again, the best player on the pitch is somehow not the big signings, but the academy graduate. He tried his best to make some impact, but the opposition’s defence didn’t let him pass.
CALLUM HUDSON-ODOI – 5/10
Everyone was complaining when he wasn’t included in the starting line-up against Fulham. And today when the chance was given, he failed to impress. He had only a shot on target.
KAI HAVERTZ – 5/10
The big money Chelsea boy displayed another lacklustre display. He failed to create any proper chance that could benefit the team.
CHRISTIAN PULISIC – 5.5/10
Was involved in the game throughout. However, his contributions weren’t enough as they failed to score even a single goal.
TAMMY ABRAHAM – 6/10
He was not able to produce anything because of their midfield. He was hardly played the ball and was left frustrated due to lack of chances created.
HAKIM ZIYECH – 5/10
He was not able to get the final touch right as he wasted a few good chances.
TIMO WERNER – 6/10
A little improved performance from the German. He was unlucky that his late goal for a comeback chance was given offside. Although it was a really tight call.
