A return back to the Premier League hasn’t gone smoothly for Leicester City. After winning just two games and sitting sixteenth in the league, Steve Cooper’s time at the club came to an end.
The 44-year-old Welsh manager was fired after just fourteen games in charge and is the second manager after Erik Ten Hag to get fired this season. The club owner was present during the 1-2 home loss to Chelsea which proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Cooper.
After the Chelsea defeat and hours before the announcement, some players flew to Copenhagen and were seen partying. They held up a board that said, “Enzo, I miss you”. Let’s talk about Steve Cooper’s firing and the group of players partying hours before the announcement.
Steve Cooper sacked after home loss to Chelsea
After his appointment in July 2024, Steve Cooper only managed to win four out of the total fourteen games he was in charge of. Even after winning two of the last three games in the Premier League, he could not save his job. The club owner was present during the 1-2 defeat against The Blues at the King Power Stadium at the weekend. The general mood around the higher-ups in the club and the player’s disbelief in the manager was the reason behind the decision. Fans were also unconvinced about his ability to keep them in the league and his exit looked inevitable.
Steve Cooper’s time at Leicester City is over, this opens the door for a new manager to come in and take charge. The new coach won’t have much time as Christmas gets closer and the teams around Leicester get better. Ruud Van Nistelrooy with Ex-Brighton manager, Graham Potter and Ex-West Ham and Manchester United manager David Moyes are being considered for the job, as per Teamtalk. West Brom’s Carlos Corberan is also an option.
Cooper’s assistant manager and the First Team coach and analyst have also left the club. Hours before Leicester City officially posted the message, a group of players were seeing partying in Copenhagen.
Leicester City players partying in Copenhagen.
A few Leicester City players, after the loss to Chelsea, partied in Copenhagen. The Danish Defender duo of Jannik Vestergaard and Victor Kristiansen held a sign that said, “Enzo, I miss you”. Enzo Maresca left the Foxes after helping them win promotion last season. The Italian joined Chelsea and is doing great at his new club. The players clearly miss Maresca and did not believe that Cooper would keep them in the league.
Enzo Maresca is not going to come back. Vestegaard and Kristiansen are going to continue missing him for a long time. Now that Steve Cooper is gone, it’s up to the players to prove that they belong in the league. The pressure is now on the players and the incoming manager to deliver results. The next few fixtures for Leicester City are not the toughest and provide a great opportunity for the new manager to settle in. After the Wolves game, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Aston Villa are up next and if Leicester City doesn’t win one of the next five games, they will end the year with just two wins in the league.
With a new manager coming in, and the players and the fans getting what they wanted, there is newfound belief. The battle to stay in the league is always tough but I don’t see Leicester staying up. Wolves are getting better, I expect West Ham and Crystal Palace to get going at some point during the season and even Ipswich look better than the Foxes.
