Liverpool Advised to Ditch Isak and Target Ollie Watkins

Liverpool will likely target Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins during the summer transfer window.

Ollie Watkins Backed as Ideal Alternative to Costly Isak

Liverpool have set their sights on boosting their squad this summer, and a new striker is high on the list. Newcastle United‘s Alexander Isak is being tracked by the PL champions. However, the Swedish star’s £130m price tag is proving to be a major issue. Isak’s 26-goal season has caught everyone’s eye. However, the Reds might not be able to afford Isak because of the reported big price tag.

Club legend Robbie Fowler has stepped in with a bold suggestion. Fowler hopes his old club will not follow through and break the transfer record with Isak, and instead targets Aston Villa‘s Watkins. Fowler believes that with Arne Slot now in charge, the club need a proven Premier League striker. And Watkins fits the bill perfectly.

The English forward has 171 goals in 466 career games, and has 18 caps with the England national team. He brings top-flight experience and sharp finishing. That could help lead Reds’ next phase under Slot.

Villa Might Sell, But Reds Eye Bundesliga Talent Too

Aston Villa turned down Arsenal’s interest in Watkins earlier this year. But, they may consider selling if a big offer comes in this summer. Villa are eyeing several top targets. That includes a possible move for Marcus Rashford. So, selling Watkins could free up key funds.

Despite his standout season, Ollie could find himself on the transfer list if Emery decides to shake things up. Fowler’s suggestion makes sense.

Reports indicate the PL champions are also keeping a close eye on Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. The 6ft 3in striker has impressed in the Bundesliga. Although, a deal could cost around €100m (£85m), Ekitike has become a top target up front.

Either way, whether it’s Watkins or Ekitike, one thing is for sure, Slot wants a new No.9. The manager wants someone who can share the scoring load with Salah and help shape the next era at Anfield.
