Liverpool and both Milan clubs interested in Ajax defender Perr Schuurs

Liverpool, AC Milan, and Inter Milan are interested in signing Ajax’s 20-year-old defender Perr Schuurs. The young defender has impressed scouts with his composed centre-back play and is linked with a move away from Amsterdam. Made Dutch club Fortuna Sitaard’s captain at the age of 17, Schurrs has always been considered ahead of his age.

His accurate passing from the back, mature decision-making, and the tag of being an Ajax youth academy product has put big clubs on alert across Europe. The Dutchman’s contract with Ajax runs out in 2021, leaving him open to hearing offers from other clubs as a free agent in January. The Dutchman is currently valued at around £27 million.

Perr Schuurs has already made more than 90 senior appearances in his short career. Inter have been linked with the centre-back for the past few weeks alongside their city rivals AC Milan, as per Italian outlet Calciomercato.

Ajax are apparently not looking to sell the defender and will seek a contract renewal. If such a renewal is not reached with the player, Schurrs will be a free agent in June 2021. If a renewal is not agreed upon in the next couple of months, Ajax would look to offload him in January to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

Inter Milan need to freshen up their backline to maintain their charge at the Serie A title. With the club expected to lose Milan Skriniar, Antonio Conte would be looking at a long-term replacement for the Slovakian. Inter sit 7th in the Serie A table and lie bottom of their UEFA Champions League group. Reinforcements for the Seria A club may well be a priority if Conte’s men don’t pick up their form by January.

Liverpool enter the race for Perr Schuurs after injury to Joe Gomez

Liverpool suffered another setback to their title charge this season as they lost Joe Gomez to a lengthy injury. The English centre-back injured his knee in England’s international training camp and faces a prolonged spell on the sidelines.

Alongside Joe Gomez, Liverpool have Dutch centre-back Virgil van Dijk out for the season with an ACL injury. Trent Alexander-Arnold has also been sidelined for a minimum of 4 weeks after his calf injury in Sunday’s clash against Manchester City.

This leaves Liverpool with only one fit senior centre-back in the already injury-prone Joel Matip. Makeshift defender Fabinho is expected to return from injury after the International break and fill in for Gomez in defense.

Liverpool also have the inexperienced Nathaniel Phillips and 19-year-old Rhys Williams available in defence, but Jurgen Klopp would prefer to avoid them unless inexorable. This makes it almost certain the Premier League champions will buy at least one centre-back in January.

The Merseysiders will be alerted by Schurr’s contract status at Ajax. If they do not meet their priority targets, the Reds would hope that the highly-rated Ajax youngster becomes the fourth Dutchman at the club alongside Virgil van Dijk, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Sepp van den Berg.

Per Schuurs, Malick Thiaw, Ozan Kabak, and Milan Skriniar are all names linked with the Reds. It will be curious to see just how much Klopp is willing to spend in January. The Reds chase consecutive Premier League titles and a 7th UEFA Champions League trophy. Without depth in defence, both of these targets become very hard to achieve no matter the quality the Reds have going forward.
