Liverpool former star forward Sadio Mane is close to scripting his name into the history book. The Senegalese forward is just one goal shy of reaching the 25-goal mark for African Players in the Champions League. Mane would only become the fourth African player to reach the milestone. Didier Drogba (44), Mohamed Salah (36), his former Liverpool FC teammate, and Samuel Eto’o (30) are the other players. The milestone would carry a significant meaning considering that Mane only scored his first goal in Europe’s elite competition in November 2017 against Sevilla. Sadio Mane has previously overtaken Didier Drogba as the African player with the most goals in the Champions League knockout stages.
Mane left for Bayern Munich in the summer in a 35 million pounds deal. He has since hit the ground running for the German Champions. In the five league matches, he has scored three goals.
Liverpool’s stumbling start of the season
Liverpool, on the other hand, has had a disappointing start to the new season. In the six Premier League games, Jurgen Klopp’s side has managed only two wins, three draws, and a defeat. They currently sit at the seventh position behind Chelsea.
The worrying start continued into the Champions League. Liverpool’s final defeat at the hands of Real Madrid might have left a haunting memory. The English side was humbled 4-1 by Italian giants Napoli in the Diego Maradona stadium. The Liverpool backline had a horrible match, combined with the forward line’s incapabilities to score goals out of the chances.
Jurgen Klopp’s side is seriously missing Mane’s presence in the offensive line. Darwin Nunez, who was signed as a replacement for Mane, has been disappointed with his performances. Mo Salah also has a hard time finding the back of the net.
Klopp would like to figure out the solutions to turn the season around before it is too late.
