Liverpool Keeping Tabs on Bilbao Winger Nico Williams

Athletic Bilbao’s rising star Nico Williams is once again being linked with Liverpool ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Liverpool Reignite Interest in Nico Williams

According to trusted sports journalist David Ornstein, Liverpool previously explored the possibility of signing Nico Williams. Although, no deal happened at that time. The 22-year-old was reportedly on the Reds’ radar last summer. And as per fresh reports there are talks of renewed interest as Arne Slot begins shaping his plans for next season.

The winger’s £50 million release clause and competition from clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal made things tricky. Now, things are unclear surrounding Luis Diaz’s future at Anfield. So, talks of Williams as a possible replacement have resurfaced.

The Athletic Bilbao star plays mainly on the left but can also slot in on the right. He can offer the kind of flexibility Arne Slot may need. While his pace and flair are great, questions remain over his fitness. He’s dealing with a groin issue all season.

Wage Demands Could Be a Dealbreaker

Nico Williams’ demands for high wages could prove to be a major concern for Liverpool. According to the Mail, he is demanding in excess of £400,000 a week. That is more than what Virgil van Dijk is on and close to Mohamed Salah’s wage.

This is for a player with 11 goals and seven assists in 44 games this season. This seems excessive for sure. Over his entire Bilbao career, he averages a goal contribution every 2.7 games. But, that is not standout for a player commanding that level of pay.

With his contract running until 2027, Bilbao are in no rush to sell their homegrown talent. Unless his wage demands change, the Reds may continue to look elsewhere.

Still, Williams remains a name to watch as the summer transfer window heats up.
