Liverpool continues to monitor the swift development of Stade Rennais FC whizkid Jeremy Doku despite rejection in summer. Former Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku playing a key role in the decision, revealed by a report by HNL.
The 18-year-old was one of the top prospects in Europe, with his early form at Anderlecht earning him a shift to Rennes last month.
Doku has an exceptional stature this summer for his performances at RSC Anderlecht that made him directly contribute six goals in seven matches in the Jupiler Pro League.
Doku’s lack of productivity is surprising in recent times, as Rennes continues to be one of the highest-scoring teams in Ligue 1 this term.
Liverpool willing to sign Jeremy Doku as a backup option in the future
Despite his recent transfer away from Belgium, the local media believe that he still fits the profile of a Liverpool player and that a switch isn’t totally out of the question in the future.
However, this hasn’t deterred down the Reds from maintaining their interest, as they are constantly sending their scouting agents and data analysis team to keep a proximal track of the Belgian.
When asked about his discussion with national teammate Romelu Lukaku Jeremy Doku stated,
“No. He advised me to stay, but from the beginning my goal was to stay.
“At least if Anderlecht was willing to make an effort, which they eventually did.
“My parents and my manager know this very well. My father wanted me to go to Liverpool and my mother too, but I said, ‘No, I want to stay’.-Jeremy Doku
Liverpool is tirelessly working to recruit new players for the long-term, as the club has undergone key injuries of Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil Van Dijk in the defensive department.
Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mane have been grateful for Jota’s arrival at Liverpool. But signing another backup option to these four-players will be the perfect team solution for the tight schedule they are facing recently.
As a result, Jurgen Klopp is desperate to sign a new center-back in the upcoming January transfer window. However, the club’s interest in Doku is an exciting one as there is no possibility of the transfer happening in winter.
The young Belgian has been improving at Rennes and it won’t be surprising to see him thrive in Ligue 1, so it will be interesting to see how this transfer saga unfolds in the future.
