Liverpool will be monitoring Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus during the Euro 2020. This is according to Guardian, who reported that Liverpool is eyeing the German as Georginio Wijnaldum’s replacement.
Georginio Wijnaldum joined PSG on a free transfer this week. As a result, Liverpool are in need of a replacement in the middle. Neuhaus is one of the players that the club is targeting for the role.
Neuhaus is with the German national side and is preparing for their Euro 2020 campaign. The midfielder has been vital for Gladbach and has attracted attention from top clubs, including Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
NEUHAUS CATCHING THE ATTENTION
The Monchengladbach midfielder is a consistent performer for his side. Joining Gladbach from TSV 1860 Munich in 2018, Neuhaus has been a regular for his team. He has appeared 116 times for Monchengladbach in all competitions and has scored 16 times for them.
Neuhaus is a central midfield role but can also play as an attacking midfielder or even on the right side of midfield. This season of Bundesliga he appeared 33 times for his club. In the league he scored 6 goals and assisted a further 5, showcasing his attacking potential.
The 24-year-old is a good passer of the ball and is known to take long shots. He is a good dribbler and has shown his attacking prowess with his nation as well, scoring 2 goals from his 6 appearances. Though his defensive numbers are in need of improvement, his age profile means that there is time for growth.
NEUHAUS TO REPLACE WIJNADLUM IN LIVERPOOL MIDFIELD
Neuhaus has been linked with multiple clubs, most notable Bayern Munich and Liverpool. There were even rumors that the player will join Bayern at the end of next season. However, Neuhaus rejected this rumor. The German has a £34.3m release clause with Gladbach and his contract runs till 2024.
Liverpool will enter the market to strengthen their midfield. Wijnaldum’s departure has left a gap in the midfield to be filled. Club captain Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones, James Milner, Fabinho, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are the options available for Jurgen Klopp in the midfield. Henderson, Thiago, and Milner are all over the age of 30, while Chamberlain and Keita do not have the full confidence of their manager.
Neuhaus is one of the signing Liverpool targets to freshen their midfield. They are also monitoring Sergej Milinkovic-Savic of Lazio and Youri Tielemans of Leicester City for the same role. So a good performance for Germany will strengthen the case for Neuhaus.
