Man City are favorites for the title as Reds legend Jamie Carragher makes a prediction after the 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Etihad.
Man City and Arsenal locked horns at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in one of the most anticipated matches of the season. City entered as favorites for the match against an Odegaard less Arsenal who were hoping to make a statement claim over their nemesis in title race. Anyway the match was Premier League classic with all the drama in it. City rescued a point in the last minute to break the hearts of a man less Arsenal side. After the 2-2 draw at the Etihad, Jamie Carragher came up with a prediction that may upset his former side also as he claimed City to win a fifth title in a row this season.
AS THE MATCH PLAYED OUT
Man City entered with a perfect record in the Premier League winning all of their first four matches and on top of the table. Arsenal on the other hand are on a exhausting run of a third match against a top notch team in the span of just seven days. Adding to the woves they dearly miss their captain Martin Odegaard through injury. Anyway match began with City as favorites to win at their home and with a strong lineup even though they missed Kevin De Bruyne. It was evident when Erling Haaland fired past David Raya to give the Cityzens lead in the ninth minute. City went on to dominate the match with only limitted opportunities for the visitors.
A freekick late in the second half from their own half was quickly taken and delivered to Gabriel Martinelli on the left flank who ran towards City defence. The Brazillian who saw no options to deliver a cross pulled one back to Riccardo Calafiori who fired a rocket past Ederson to level the match. Quickly after that Gabriel for a second PL match in a row headed Arsenal in the lead. The match went into controversial mode after Leandro Trossard was sent off for a second yellow for time wasting.
From then on Man City completely dominated the match trying to find an equaliser against a 10 men Arsenal. The Gunners sat back in an all defensive mode adamant to let City balls past them. Consistent effort from the home side finally yielded when John Stones in the dying minutes of the match got an equaliser. A few minutes of the match we all thought that Arsenal were going to make a statement victory and make an early claim on the title. Because these sort of resilient victories are those deliver titles. When City equalised that late we can also say that. Victories like these deliver titles. How fast fortunes can change in football.
WHAT CARRAGHER SAID?
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher talking to Sky Sports podcast came up with bold predictions after the 2-2 draw. The footballer turned pundit said City have a ‘little bit more’ over arch nemesis’ Arsenal and Liverpool. It might upset some of the Reds fans but look at what he has said.
‘I think it will be similar to last season where Liverpool are just slightly behind these two teams.’
‘By next season they could be really improving and maybe looking to go for it when the manager knows everything about his squad.
‘Remember he hasn’t really bought anymore. It’s still last season’s team and I still think they’re the third-best team in the league.’
Carragher has already pronounced Liverpool as the third best team in the league. Arsenal and Man City will compete for the title.
He went on to say that ‘Looking at the two teams we watched today, I still just think Man City have got a little bit more. When I look at the squads and the attacks… Kevin de Bruyne didn’t play today.
‘They’ve got a bit more in the attacking areas, I think they’ve got a bit more. I just think Man City have the edge.’
He said Man City ‘have the edge’ above both Arsenal for the title. With the squad strength and the depth of the squad.
MAN CITY AND ARSENAL TITLE PREDICTION
We are aligning with Jamie Carragher on this one. That was a City team without De Bruyne who is out injured. Still they rescued a point on the day. Like said earlier it is these sort of moments that wins you titles wins you championships. Arsenal on the other hand weren’t bad at all but as Carragher said City have that edge over both Arsenal and Liverpool.
