Man United legend Rio Ferdinand has slammed Arsenal for the signing they made in summer window. He believes that the amount they spent on that signing has not been justified and Gunners should have went for other position.
Gunners are sitting on the 2nd position in Premier League but are way behind of table toppers Liverpool. They have dropped points on multiple occasions due to lack of attacking options. Arteta wants reinforcement in attack this month but Gunners are finding it very hard to get any deal done.
Man United legend slams Arsenal’s business in summer window
Rio Ferdinand is not impressed with the signing of Riccardo Calafiori. He believes that the North London club should have signed a striker. He thinks that the Italian has not justified the big transfer fee yet.
“What are (Arsenal) going to do in this window? Everyone is talking about a striker. In the summer, they went and brought Riccardo Calafiori. £42 million they spent on him and he doesn’t even start. If you are going to spend that much he should go straight into the Arsenal team. Especially when there’s big shout that they need a centre-forward and they’ve invested somewhere else” – Ferdinand on his youtube channel.
Ferdinand’s comment can have mixed reactions. Firstly, some will agree as Gunners did had a great defensive depth before signing Calafiori. They were best team in defense last season and attackers were the requirement of the club. In addition, Calafiori has started just 8 league games so far and has also suffered constant injury issues.
However, there is other side to this story as well. Gunners are open to part ways with both Zinchenko and Tierney. In addition, Kiwior is also forcing an exit. This makes Calafiori a key addition as he will be a long-term solution. As of performances, the Italian has played very well whenever given chance. He has also scored 2 very important goals along with picking 1 assist.
