Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy was arrested earlier and has been charged with four counts of rape. He is also charged with one count of sexual assault.

The Premier League champions have come out with an official club statement regarding their player. Manchester City has suspended Mendy pending an investigation. The club will not be making further comments until the process is complete.

Mendy is currently remanded in police custody. The City defender was charged by the Cheshire Constabulary and is set to appear in front of  Chester Magistrates’ Court.

MENDY TIME WITH CITY TO END?

“The charges relate to three complainants over the age of 16 and are alleged to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021,” – is the statement given by Cheshire Constabulary.

Chester Magistrates court also mentions that one of the alleged rapes took place at Mendy’s home. This happened when the City defender was already on police bail for other sexual offences. As a result, the player was denied further bails. Hence, Mendy could have to remain in custody till the 10th of September which is his next court date.

The arrest and ensuing issues cap off what has been an underwhelming time for Mendy at Manchester City. Ever since his big-money move from Monaco in 2017, the left-back has not been able to cement his position under Pep Guardiola.

Injuries and lack of form kept him time-limited. His lifestyle and attitude have previously been under question. Now the arrest and case could bring an end to his time in the blue half of Manchester.
